i find that i always call my CF nurse for everything that comes up with Aidan. even if it isnt CF related. the last time i called his ped. about a stuffy runny nose they told me to give him benadryl. then when i called Aidans CF nurse to let her know, she said that is a big no, no. so now if anything ever comes up that i need to talk to a doctor about i always call the CF center. i was just wondering if anyone else feels and does the same?

Also im really racking my brain over here on this one, and any help would be great. Aidan has allergies(at least thats what is being determined) my guess is "seasonal" allergies. the runny nose all the time sneezing red itchy eyes. and to boot the cough from the nasal drip. so hes been on claritin for 4 days now and no more sneezing, or red itchy eyes. but the nose is still running down his face and that cough is still there. i did go to the ped to listen to his chest, and that is all clear, no ear infection, and the stuff coming out of his nose is clear. it could also be a cold to that has to run its course. i just thought i would see better results with the claritin. it just seems hes not drying up. do you think he has a sinus infection? his CF nurse says hes too young for them, the sinuses arent developed enough yet for infections. maybe he needs something stronger to dry him up. any suggestions that others have used on their kids that worked would be great and ill ask his doc. maybe he needs to get scratch tested for what he has allergies to? i really think their seasonal cause i have them too and feel lousy. no matter what i take. well i hope to hear some feedback. i feel so bad for him. plus he cant talk so its not like he can tell me how he feels...AAAHHHHH

I'd ask your CF DOCTOR about the allergy issue see what meds he suggests, testing, etc. I usually take DS in to the regular peds doctor if he's running a fever, although a couple of times urgent care prescribed things his CF doctor didn't want him on -- prednisol for wheezing... Other times, I was told by the regular doctor that DS's cough was normal -- cfers cough, that's what they do. So with a cough, I've learned to listen to see if it's post nasal drip or bronchial and call his CF doctor in the City.

DS got sinus infections early on -- first year he had a nasty yellow boogery nose most of the winter until his CF doctor told us it wasn't normal, he had a sinus infection and told us that it could've gotten into his lungs. The other issue is, if the stuff is clear, then it's not an infection and if you're looking at "drying things up", it's not good to give CFers things like benydryl to "dry them up" you want his mucus to flow and not get all bogged down and risk infection. We usually just use saline spray to try to keep things cleaned up and from stagnating.

It's frustrating because our CF doctor is 250 miles away, but I'm much, much more comfortable calling them is there's an issue than going locally. Our CF doctor once told us that a number of his patients just consider going to his office a long commute and I guess it's not a bad price to pay for peace of mind.

Whenever I have issues, I go to whoever has the most education on the issue.

More times than not, that's the CF doc. There are random things like Benedryl being a no-no for CFers that a ped won't know.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote> i just thought i would see better results with the claritin. it just seems hes not drying up.
</end quote></div>

Claritin is just about the weakest anti-histamine on the market.

Since DS is older than 1 year, ask your doc about oral suspension Allegra. That will work much better.

Throw in some Singulair as well and that will do wonders for allergies. Make sure to get both.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote> maybe he needs to get scratch tested for what he has allergies to? </end quote></div>

That sounds wise.
