CF docs in North Carolina?

Hi everyone,

I'm moving to North Carolina for graduate school and I was wondering if anyone had any doctors to recommend in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. I know UNC Chapel Hill has a big CF clinic, but I'm starting off seeing the adult doctor at Duke Hospital, since I'll be living in Durham and going to school at Duke anyway.

I'm generally pretty good at taking care of myself -- last year was a little rocky, so I am now very cognizant of a doctor's bedside manner and relationship with patients. In other words, no scary doctors please! :)

Thanks,

Megan

hey megan, i was diagnosed at Duke and when my doc retired from there i started going to UNC (about age 4) and have been going there ever since. I absolutely cannot say enough good things about the adult clinic at UNC. There are a lot of different docs so you're bound to find one or more that you like! and the nursing staff there is amazing as well. the CF nurse Kathy consistently goes above and beyond her job description to make sure we're all taken care of and getting everything we need. i routinely call her about anything and she helps me out from getting perscriptions refilled to insurance questions etc. and if she doesn't know she'll find out or get you in touch with someone who does. I know you've said you're going to be going to Duke and i've heard some good things about that clinic as well. I believe its smaller and not everyone loves the doc(s) there, but that could be something i *thought* i heard and could be wrong. I believe there are some people here that go to duke for their care so hopefully they will chime in on this, but again, i HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend UNC!

i'm assuming you're from CA based on your sign in name and having never lived there i can't really say if you'll like NC better but i've lived in this area (chapel hill) my whole life and absolutely love it and hope you will too! feel free to pm me if you have more questions about the area....-jaime

i go to unc for my care. i've only gone there for about 1 1/2 years total. i am military so i've moved back and forth between nc and fl over the past 2 years. there are a few docs that i don't like there, but that is mainly because i am VERY PICKY and i just generally don't like doctors. which is odd considering i've been going to them all my life. i however do really like two of the doctors i've come in contact with, one whose name was dr. morillas...she got married and now is dr. mej...something and there is an irish doctor too and i really like him i think probably because he was the doctor to finally believe me about tobi. anyways they have done a really good job thus far with me. i got pregnant back in october and they saw me about every 2 months unless i was sick and they climbed right on top of it when i got sick so that it didn't get awful. if you have any specific questions feel free to pm me and ask me! i'm pretty much and open book.

I too go to UNC for my CF care and I drive 2.5 hrs to do it passing DUke on my way!! I live 40 mins from one childrens center in Richmond (no adult program) and 90 mins from an adult program at UVA. UNC was recommended to me by the specialists at National Jewish and I am VERY happy with them. When searching the web for diff. treatments or options on CF I often find that my docs are the ones doing the most research on cf topics.
Not only are they on cutting edge for treatment, their staff are so good. I love the docs, nurses and esp. Kathy the NP. SHe really goes out of her way to help. SHe has been there forever so really knows the ropes.
THey are also good about listening to me and my concerns or suggestions. They believe my sx etc and really include me in the plan of care.
I haven't been to Duke or UVA and haven't heard any bad things so can't comment on them. In fact I think both programs have high ratings I just don't know anyone from either program.
Suffice it to say that I think the drive (despite gas prices and even if I have to be inpt) is well worth it
Feel free to pm me if I can answer any other questions.
