CF in the family

Hi,

A year ago my sister in law had beautiful baby boy. They shortly found out soon that he had CF.

We were sitting around the kitchen table, and my sister in law told me that her son will never meet his cousin (as he also has CF and is in his teens)

I asked why this was so, and was told that the toddler could contract a disease off the CF teen. I thought this was strange and wanted to know if she has been misinformed as this has created a lot of angst amongst family members. (As in cannot be in the same house together whilst having a bbq)

Can anyone shed some light on this, or know of anywhere I can gain more information?

Thanks

Yori

Hi yori,
i live in australia, and i know that here the doctors wont let two cf people have contact. basically because if the older teen (or even the baby) has an infection the other doesn't, they can pass it on, and some of these 'bugs' are extremely difficult to get rid of. so if the teen has had psudemonus the baby might get it.
their is no one else in our family who has cf besides blake so i have never had to deal with this particular issue. but hopefully your family sorts it all out and both the boys are doing well

I think in most of the world there is the cross contamination worry among CF patients. The bacterias that we culture arent usually a problem to a healthy person, but their are contagious to another CFer.

Its a personal decision. There are siblings who live with each other & that always face that worry. There are other family members who face the worry, but choose to be cautious & enjoy each others company. Then there are those who dont want to take any risks at all.

They/you could start with finding out what, if any, bacteria each of them culture. From there decisions could be made? Just a thought!

I personally would never subject a younger CFer in my family to my bacteria.

The poor kid isn't old enough to be able to make a choice and could live with the consequences of my bacterial transmission for the rest of his or her life.

I wouldn't chance it.
