Thank you for the response. I checked that cf website you mentioned and my income disqualified me. I guess what I'm figuring out...is that if you have CF and a certain income level, then you're on your own. Problem is, if I pay for this CF out of pocket, it would pretty much break me financially. So then my family is up the creek. Catch 22, I guess. Pay for the CF outright, be broke, and live longer. Or I can DIY to the best of my ability as I've been doing, live much shorter, and have my standard of living stay the same for the time I have.</end quote></div>

Hi Bink.
I was in that same boat your in.
I chose to live longer, paid out of pocket for
everything. Still do for most things.
Good Luck to You.

I guess you're fortunate to have made it as long as you did without insurance, but I and most CFer's NEED insurance of some kind. Even though I make a pretty good living, if I had to pay for my meds outright I'd be bankrupt pretty quickly, I think it's about $10k per month in drugs I take. There are some assistance programs like Debra mentioned for CFer's but I would recommend getting on some sort of group insurance plan before you Really need to pay for a lot of meds or even hospitalizations. Luckily the new health care reform will actually allow you to get independent coverage even though you have CF, unfortunately that aspect won't kick in till 2013.
If you live in California there's an option as well, GHPP, which is why I basically can't move out of the state if I wanted to. Basically figure out if your employer (if you're not your own) has insurance options or if you belong to any groups or professional societies where you can join a group plan. CFer's are pretty screwed by the current system, luckily I think it's on its way to get better.
Another option of course is to move to Canada, Cuba, Europe or one of the many other countries that have a federal health plan option.

Good luck!

I can't believe I am going to recommend this but I would have your finacial assets transferred out of your name. I know it isn't exactly on the up and up, however, it is insane to think that anyone can pay for the cost of CF meds without insurance.

Hopefully, soon, the new health care reform will actually do something to improve your situation.
