CF saved my life when appendix ruptured

Wow! The same thing happened to my husband about 5 years ago. He had intense pain and went to the ER and they told him it was just gas. Eventually the pain went away but he had this lump in his side... the doctors couldn't figure out what it was, and eventually, after several months, they just cut him open to figure it out, and it was his appendix.

I never thought that CF could be the reason that he survived this - he likes to say he's invincible, ha. But that makes senses about the mucus walling it off. So crazy that it's happened to multiple people here!

The same thing happened to me! I was shocked when I read Tanya's story. When I was about 21, I had a bad lung infection and had been on oral abx for some time. I started havig extreme abdominal pain, which they attributed to a side effect from the abx. The pain would not go away and was getting worse. I was really even unable to make a BM anymore. My doc did a GYN exam and then admitted me to the hospital. My WBC was 45,000. They did ultrasounds and x-rays but could not figure out what was going on. They finally decided to do exploratory surgery; but, scheduled it for the next day because they wanted me to have some IV abx to help clear my lungs before major surgery. I did not have access to a CF care center at that time in my life. I found out later that they all assumed I was going to die. I guess my first clue was when the priest came in to give me "last rights". I questioned that and really had little fear. I thought, well that is nice that they do that for people before surgery. I guess that was my ultimate blonde moment. I still remember questioning the surgeon cuz I really knew in my heart that it was my appendix. I asked him "what if it is my appendix and it ruptures overnight". His words to me were- "oh honey, if it was your appendix it would have burst by now". They went in the next day and my appendix had swollen to the size of a grapefruit and had walled itself off from the rest of my body. I give credit to prayer and a God who had future plans for me<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm wondering if there is an appendix connection b/c of all these stories I'm reading-also I know of 2 cfers (another on this board and myself) that had appendicits this spring.
Cooincidentally we had the same symptoms and same looking appdx's...the similarities made the surgeons suspect a connection bet appendicitis and cf.

I had laproscopic surgery when I was 27 years old and the surgeon noticed my appendix was partially curled up (perhaps burst). He said he had never seen anything like it. He wasn't able to remove it because by the time he found it he was 4 hours into the surgery and the anesthesiologist said it was time to quit, as I wasn't responding well anymore. So it's still in there, all curled up like a shrimp. (fat on one end and shriveled on the other) It's oddly suspicious because when I was a kid, maybe about 10 years old I had unexplained fevers and abdominal pain. They kept suspecting bowel blockage. It eventually resolved on it's own. But now I wonder...is appendicitis connected to CF?
