CFRD and Pregnancy?

So I recently was diagnosed with CFRD in May of last year. I know with CF it is difficult to have children, and being diagnosed with CFRD pretty much scared me even more. I know it would not only be hard on me, but requires constant monitoring to prevent birth defects. But I tend to be on the careful side when it comes to medical stuff.

What I was wondering, is are there any of you with CFRD (not just gestational diabetes) that have had children? Does anyone have any advice or experiences they would share?

Hello!

I have CF/rD for 17 years, and a pumper for 4 years. Right now, I am in the process of tightening my BSL before my husband and I TTC. My dr.dos'nt want us to try until my sugars are tight. By tight I mean:
Pre Meal: 80-100
Post Meal: 130-135

I was told unstable sugars means, bigger baby, pre-mature birth, more side affects for the mom, fatique ( even more than what you would feel). My team stresses the importance of stable sugars esp when you first concieve, and the baby is forming. They want an A1C to be a 6!

They also told me, it can be done. With CF, With just Diabetes, together, the outcome is a good one. It was stressed that I have to be compliant with testing my blood sugars, calling them each day with my numbers and be monitored.

So far that has been my expierence.

Hey Sheanna (& Kris - it's Tina!)

Okay, so I have had CFRD for 3 years and now am going on 31 weeks pregnant. Prior to getting pregnant, I was on Metformin & Januvia... never used insulin injections. My pregnancy was not planned, but not totally unplanned either

So... prior to getting pregnant, and when I got pregnant, my a1c was around 7.3, and like Kristy said, they want it to be ideally 6 or under. I found out I was pregnant early - i was only 4 weeks when I found out. Meaning for about a month while I was pregnant, my sugars were probably running 160 to low 200's post meals. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I started insulin injections... and got the hang of it pretty quickly. Since about 12 weeks pregnant, my a1c has been 5.8 which is great for being pregnant with diabetes. It has been difficult, and I have had high numbers every now and then.. and I have also had extreme lows too. Being pregnant does WEIRD things to the body and CFRD is complicated enough in itself, without being pregnant.

I check my sugars about 6-8 times a day (I eat a lot! hehe) and fax my sugar readings to my endo once a week on these sheets they gave me (havent been faxing them the last 3 weeks since I'm going to see a new endo tomorrow for the first time - new insurance & I didn't like my endo much anyways)..

so, all in all... even with the occasional high sugars (maybe a few times a month), my baby girl is measuring perfectly now and I am almost 31 weeks pregnant. I think SO much is still unknown with diabetes while pregnant, and having the occasional high sugar won't mean you're going to have a huge baby. Just be careful, watch what you eat, and try to stay away from sweets, regular softdrinks and carbs. If you NEED to eat any of those, take the according insulin

It is definitely not easy being pregnant with CF & CFRD but it is manageable and you can/will have a healthy baby

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for your comments guys! Maybe there is hope for me in the future, but we'll just have to see what my A1C's are in the future. I have been super-frustrated this year because I started out at a 6.3, then a 5 and now am a 7.3 randomly. My doctor thinks my kidney stones (three of them!) May have had something to do with it. I'm hoping to have better numbers next appointment, but we are still playing with my insulin levels as I was only put on a regiment about 8 months ago. I do pretty well for the most part but I'll have points where I randomly get into the 300's and even the 400's once...that was bad, and I didn't feel it! I found out when I did my 2hr post meal test.

PS Tina, I love your tan I really need to go tanning soon because I'm beginning to look like the crypt keeper...nobody goes outside in the winter in Wyoming because it's just so darn cold. And congrats on the pregnancy Tina! Good luck to you Kris!
