Hey Sheanna (& Kris - it's Tina!)
Okay, so I have had CFRD for 3 years and now am going on 31 weeks pregnant. Prior to getting pregnant, I was on Metformin & Januvia... never used insulin injections. My pregnancy was not planned, but not totally unplanned either
So... prior to getting pregnant, and when I got pregnant, my a1c was around 7.3, and like Kristy said, they want it to be ideally 6 or under. I found out I was pregnant early - i was only 4 weeks when I found out. Meaning for about a month while I was pregnant, my sugars were probably running 160 to low 200's post meals. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I started insulin injections... and got the hang of it pretty quickly. Since about 12 weeks pregnant, my a1c has been 5.8 which is great for being pregnant with diabetes. It has been difficult, and I have had high numbers every now and then.. and I have also had extreme lows too. Being pregnant does WEIRD things to the body and CFRD is complicated enough in itself, without being pregnant.
I check my sugars about 6-8 times a day (I eat a lot! hehe) and fax my sugar readings to my endo once a week on these sheets they gave me (havent been faxing them the last 3 weeks since I'm going to see a new endo tomorrow for the first time - new insurance & I didn't like my endo much anyways)..
so, all in all... even with the occasional high sugars (maybe a few times a month), my baby girl is measuring perfectly now and I am almost 31 weeks pregnant. I think SO much is still unknown with diabetes while pregnant, and having the occasional high sugar won't mean you're going to have a huge baby. Just be careful, watch what you eat, and try to stay away from sweets, regular softdrinks and carbs. If you NEED to eat any of those, take the according insulin
It is definitely not easy being pregnant with CF & CFRD but it is manageable and you can/will have a healthy baby
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
