Tonya-
Sounds like folks here have given you good advice, & you found an endocronologist that both you & your son like! One other option to insulin is an oral med called Prandin, that my CF endocronologist said is the recommended oral med if blood sugar is fairly under control, but your son may need a little extra help. It's taken before a meal, & she says it can be adjusted from 1/2 - 2 pills, depending on how many carbs are being consumed. I test my blood sugar 3x's/day now, & use the Prandin & digestive enzymes before I eat, & so far this is managing my CFDR, along w/diet. I want to stay off insulin as long as possible, & so far, this is working!

When I was dix'd with diabetes, I was initially placed on Prandin too and shortly afterwards, placed on insulin. My sugar was in the 500 range though, so that was the final push to be placed on insulin. So far, so good....Sounds like your son has a great handle on things. Some people just freak out when they have to prick themselves, I saw it over and over as a nurse who did diabetes training. Thank god that the new tiny gauge lancets and meters that require so little blood, it is has become so much easier! I personally use my palm as test sites as well as my fore arms. I never feel a thing and my meter only uses a pin head's worth of blood.
I never knew that about A1C's and CF'ers as far as red blood cells go. The highest my A1C was, was 6.8, under 7 and my sugars were fairly high. Good to know that we have false lows!
I pray that the next 3 months goes smoothly for all of you! You should be very proud of Andrew, sounds like he handled this better than alot of adults would <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

My blood sugars were consistently over 200, but I got the go-ahead to try to change things and keep watch. I was successful. My blood sugars dont spike above 150 or so now and I can keep them above 60 (they used to rebound down very low to seizure level for me). I do a combo of careful food choices, timing, and a lot of exercise. My pancrease is non-functional for enzymes too.

My daughter at 14 was told she had Cf diabetis, which is not like regular diabetis you dont get the regular complications, like eye sight going bad, or the foot ulcers, we were encouraged to still eat the high carb fatty foods because of weight issues, so we just counted carbs and gave the insulin she still drank regular pop, but make sure you watch closly because if her sugars are out of control that brings on lung infections and vise versa if you get a lung infection your sugers will run high because of illness

my daughter passed away on December 19, at the age of 18 years, 11 months and 19 days its just been over a month now,
