What is the average age of CFRD developing? My 6 yr old daughter has to go back and repeat her bloodwork b/c her blood sugar was high last week. Of course, I am freaking out. Honestly, I don't know much about it. I thought it normally happened in the teenage years. Can anyone educate me about it please? I'm worried.

Personally I was diagnosed at 18. I think usually people are in their teens/early 20s when they develop it. I DID know a girl that was diagnosed with CFRD at age 8 though, and that was quite a long time ago (I was only about 9 myself).

Sorry I can't offer much more than that. Yes, the average age is probably older than your daughter is right now, but if she has it, she has it, and it is best she gets the treatment for it right away. If she does turn out to have CFRD there is a wealth of information and support for you here, SaltyandSweet probably being the in-house expert, along with a few others. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Don't worry too much! I actually just wrote a paper on CFRD for my biochemistry class, and the early testing is very precautionary. Yes, so children do develop it in their early adolescence, but I think the number is in the 1-2% range. In the teens it is about 10%, and then it starts climbing in early adulthood.

They just like to test to catch it early! Ultimately, it's a good thing if they catch it so she can grow and be a healthy little kid in the end <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I was 39 before I got an official dx of CFRD. I did have gestational at 30 & sugar highs when on certain meds etc, but they always returned to normal. Not anymore....

It varies from CFer to CFer, but as a rule its usually a bit older that it sets in.
