Has anyone ever heard of getting a chemical burn under your picc line dressing after a dressing change? I'm talking full on blisters.

Hi Candice,
I dont think ive ever had a chemical burn but I am allergic to tegaderm & lots of other adhesives.. I've had all kinds of bumps & marks from the reaction.. Did you let your dr. know? Maybe they can recommend something to alleviate the discomfort if you have any.
Take care joni

i had the infusion company but a different dressing on. i had full blown blisters that have oozed under the dressing. and blisters that are on the outside of the dressing that have started to heal and have scabbed over.

I agree with the others that it is probably an allergy to either the tagaderm or the cleaning agent. The last PICC the blisters oozed so badly that the dressing literally fell off. Yuck!

When your PICC comes out wait a few months (if you can- not sure how often you get PICCS) and test the cleaning solution (chloroprep) on a patch of skin anywhere except where your PICC line was (ex: leg) and see if you react. Try the same with a piece of tagaderm or any other adhesive/cleaning solution they use. The nurses were more than accommodating and this helped me narrow down exactly what I was allergic to- which was multiple things!

Sorry you have to deal with this because I know how uncomfortable it is. Hope your skin heals quickly and feels better. Oh, and even though my nurses said I had the most extreme reaction they have ever seen my skin completely healed so you most likely won't scar.

the funny thing is i normally itch from the dressing in general. when i had my 24 hour dressing change is when this happened. the nurse changed it and within 24 hours i was really itching and noticing a reaction. i had to wait through the weekend to get it changed again. i had it changed on monday and i can't watch it or i will pass out. so after she was done i got to see what it looked like. she moved the position of the line because that is where the reaction was. i have a picture of it on my phone i will see if i can up load a picture of it to here. she said sometimes if you dont let the skin dry completely and put the dressing back on too soon it can burn your skin. i go tomorrow for a new dressing change cause i told another nurse on wednesday i didn't think it was a good idea to change my dressing because of the blisters.

Hey Candice,
That looks like an allergic reaction from the dressing & or the central line dressing change tray they are using .. I am allergic to both..
For me what works best is ... ChloraPrep One Step & Primapore (smith & Nephew) Dressing .. I usually have probs getting them in hospital , but my home care co carries many different types, most of which I am allergic to lol ..
I hope you get some relief from that asap ! It looks very uncomfortable ..
Take care <3 joni

it's actually healed since then. it looks a lot better. i get a new dressing tomorrow. i'm hoping it's the same nurse that changed it last monday. i'm sort of afraid to let the other nurse do it and i know how mean that sounds.
