I am by no means trying to be the bearer of bad news, but I experienced chest pains like that four months ago. I'm sure it was pleuresy, because it ended with a spontaneous pnuemothorax (lung collapse).
Not saying that's what your son is experiencing, but don't take any chances. Call his doc, and if possible, get a chest x-ray to be sure. Its worth the peace of mind, at the very least. It could just be an infection, but in any case, your son's doc needs to know.
