I am by no means trying to be the bearer of bad news, but I experienced chest pains like that four months ago. I'm sure it was pleuresy, because it ended with a spontaneous pnuemothorax (lung collapse).

Not saying that's what your son is experiencing, but don't take any chances. Call his doc, and if possible, get a chest x-ray to be sure. Its worth the peace of mind, at the very least. It could just be an infection, but in any case, your son's doc needs to know.

My son also had chest pains last week. It hurt so bad that he could not move from the couch. He is a senior in high school. He took some zantac and stayed home that morning for a few hours. It helped but I did not know if it was heart burn or what. He has experienced this before and it worries me too.
