I have just finished my iv antibiotics after having them for 4week, so i have been feeling pretty well lately. but the last few days i have been experiencing pains in my chest and back. It hurts sometimes when i expand my lungs. its a sharp pain that does not last long.
Im more worried about it today though because i have just coughed up blood. this isnt a new thing to happen to me, it has happened before but it doesnt stop me worrying.
do you think i have infection? were is the blood coming from exactly? the blood is bright red.

Unfortunately hemoptysis ( coughing up blood) can have no rhyme or reason. It just happens on its own. If you just finished 4 weeks of iv's , i doubt it would be infection related but then again it could be. Is it close to your period? Sometimes the menstrual cycle can play a part in hemoptysis. Are you on Vitamin K ? Maybe since you are having pain in your chest and back you should call your doctor and see if he or she has any ideas or advice. The blood can be from an irritation in the lung itself, it could be from a blood vessel, its hard to say. How much did you cough up? A teaspoon or less ? More than a teaspoon ? a table spoon or more?

staying calm and trying not to cough is the best thing you can do. A teaspoon isnt too bad at all. My doctor tells me if it is a teaspoon or less, They dont really worry about it. ( i do no matter how little an amount) You may still want to call your doctor since it isnt a usual occurrance for you. I hope it stops completely !

I, like Diane, am very experienced with hemoptysis. I have had this prob for about 5 years now. It sounds like I have it worse than you on average because a teaspoon is a small amount to me. Even though I say that, even a teaspoon makes me nervous.
When I have hemoptysis I usually have chest pain associated with it. I can pinpoint where the bleeding is coming from because I can feel the gurgle. The pain comes from right where it gurgles. I, like you, try to hold back my cough to try and prevent it from getting worse. I believe that its the best thing to do.
I am just sharing with you my experience so you may not feel alone.
Having said all of this, I agree with Diane, that its always a good idea to call your Dr and tell them whats going on. Even if they decide that you should just sit tight and not do anything about it, its always good to communicate with them about what is going on.
I hope you feel better soon! Hang in there!

I've gotten to the point where my dr's don't tell me to do anything about the blood. I bleed before, during and after IV's for some reason. Before ANYTIME that I would bleed the nurse practicioner always had me start IV's (thinking it was infection) but it's not. It is just what my body does. So now they are over that (because I never freaked out about it, just tried to stop it).
So for me, it is 'normal' to bleed. Never can pinpoint it but I usually don't have pain. So I just continue to do all treatments, exercise, etc. just as I would if I weren't bleeding at all.

You might want to ask your dr for the fact that you are having pain, that could be an indication of something.

Good luck and I hope it's nothing!
