Childcare and CF

I work. I'm a college professor, so I have a pretty flexible schedule. I'm gone two afternoon/evenings a week. I set this schedule before CF was even as issue and I had my first son. I have always had a sitter come into my home to care for my kids while I'm at work. This has always worked really well for us, but it did get a bit more complicated with the CF. If my sitter is sick or her kids are sick I don't want them here. So basically, I have to take a sick day if I'm sick, my kids are sick, my sitter is sick or her kids are sick. ITs a long list and that can seem like weeks of cancelled classes!! LOL!! But it works for us.

i was really grateful that my mom stayed at home with me. no matter how good a nanny/day care is, no one would have been as good as my mom.

i know i'm healthier for it....

i know we didn't have as much money as we would have had if she had worked. but if you asked me as a kid if i wanted more things or my mom, i know i would have said my mom <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

The director runs a tight ship in terms of sanitizing everything, letting everyone know if a child is sick... We were fortunate. Not always the case with daycare. And in our case we thought long and hard about our decision. Talked with our CF doctor. Figured we'd give it a try and if there were issues, then we'd rethink things. DS has done quite well.

My daughter started going to an in-home daycare (no more than 6 kids)when I had to return to work after maternity leave at 3 months old. We did not know at the time that she has CF (no newborn screening at that time in our state).

She was diagnosed at 18 months old. One of our first questions was whether to take her out of daycare. Our doctor has no problem with her being in daycare, in fact, I think it has helped her more than it has hurt her. Thankfully, she has not had any CF related issues thus far. She is now 4 years old . . . still going to the same daycare.

Daycares, if run properly by people who care, are not as bad as some people will make them out to be. Of course, a nanny is a good alternative as well. Wherever your child is and whoever her caregiver is, she is going to have illnesses, just like any other child would. I say give the nanny a try and continue working, if that is what you really want to do. Having a career and a child with CF can be done.
