I'm on Cotrimoxazole Forte every other day. This is 960 mg every other day.

This a maintenance drug post transplant so I've been on it continuously for almost 3 years.

Luckily I've never had these problems.

I am so glad I saw this thread. Emily is usually rx'ed Bactrim when she gets sick, since her staph is sensitive to it and she always loses her appetite in a big way when on it. (This is a particularly troublesome side effect, given she has already started losing weight by the time she's put on it.) Due to illness, she has needed steroids recently while on it, and experienced marked agitation and sleeplessness- which I know is a common side effect while on steroids, but I wonder if it could have been compounded by also being on the Bactrim.

I'm so sorry to hear how miserable you are... please don't feel like you are a baby because you feel like you need help. It's so good you have your parents (well, usually- I am so sorry there are not there now when you need them most) and your Nana for support. That is so important. I'm so glad that you are feeling a little better today at least.

I feel like I have to add- natural remedies, etc are all well & good (I'm not an expert on any of that so can't comment further) but professional help and medications have their place as well. We can make informed choices about our treatment with the doctors we trust; withholding important information from our caregivers when we are worried something is wrong is never a good thing.

Not sure about the Bactrim since I haven't taken it in a while, but Cipro/Levaquin definitely mess me up. The sleeping thing is always a problem, so sometimes I just have to take sleeping pills every few nights to try to get some sleep. That doesn't always work either, though.

I've also had some trouble with depression-type symptoms from that drug. One course of it had me crying uncontrollably, and another time after being on and off it for months on end (trying to avoid my first IV's), I found myself avoiding being around people and feeling flat/just nothing. It was very strange and a bit scary to me.

These days I've had to stop taking it for the most part because it messed up a tendon in my ankle. It's especially a problem since I can't tell the different between the severe joint pain it causes me and the pain of a tendon thinking about rupturing. The downside of that is--bring on the IV's more often, but I sure don't miss all of the side effects.

By the way, I completely agree about not keeping things from your doctor. I used to be terrible about that and have had to learn my lesson the hard way! It's not the recommended method of learning =)
