Cipro - how to disguise the taste

Yep. We took adeks like a champ too. And while we've been basically healthy, what he's been given he's taken with no problem. However THIS is going to be a challenge. Called the pharmacist this morning - they basically had nothing to offer. We are playing chemists today to try and work something out!!)

Two stories about taking meds:

1. Growing up, I took an enzyme called Cotazym. It came in a green capsule, and as a small kid, I couldn't swallow pills yet. So my mother would open the enzyme contents into a medicine cup, put a little sugar in it, and then mix in the green capsule (she would pre-dissolve it to a paste) into the mix (I loved the green color, I guess). I'd take the whole thing like a champ.

I was about 4 or 5 when I started opening the capsules and taking them in a cup, following with a chase of water.

2. When I was small, I struggled with bowel obstructions, so my doctor put me on Mucomyst to drink. It smelled like rotten eggs, and tasted even worse. My mother used to try to mix it in Orange Juice, and 30+ years later, when I drink OJ, I still get taste flashbacks.

I figured out how to take it, though. I'd take it like a shot and THEN chase it with OJ, which helped clean my palate of the taste.

I cleverly told my doctor that I had renamed it to Puke-o-myst.

So, yeah, I knew how to do "shots" before I knew what a "shot" was!
I am so sorry you have to/had to go through this stuff, but I-am-laughing! The pharmacist told me to squirt it into his mouth and then follow it with a good drink. However, I think he'll spit it all out. He spit out the very little bit I gave him yesterday, all of it. And he drinks juice rather than water, and he drinks it like crazy, and he didn't drink his juice all day yesterday. Just put him down so us chemists will go to work soon!!)

Hmm, how 'bout ketchup? I used it in a pinch when I didn't have baby food bananas or applesauce for DS' enzymes.

If your son can swallow his enzymes this may work:
We get the tablet cipro form and crush it up with a pill crusher then funnel it in my daughters creon pill. She doesn't even know she takes it!! We then make it fun for her to take her enzymes on chocolate syrup while on the cipro. She does not mind the beads on the chocolate! That we do not waste the enzymes because it does take about 3 pills. It is a pain in the butt -but she does not fight it which makes the time all worth it in the end!

Thanks so much ladies. I ended up mixing it with chocolate syrup. As a few had mentioned that seemed to hide the taste the best. Equal amounts, if not even a little more syrup. Then we quickly followed it with Lays Potato Chips. The salt really cuts the after taste. And he loves those, so he was excited at the prospect of the chips (great bribery).

I have a question about Cipro also... How do you go about the dietary restrictions while on Cipro? Having trouble with the no milk thing and also finding foods that don't have milk/calcium... What do you do?
