cleaning irritates my lungs

The older you get with CF, the more irritable you become from common respiratory irritants, especially so with chemicals (perfume, cleaning chemicals, hairspray, etc etc). The good news is you have something generally new to complain about. The bad news is, you are less for this world. Don't feel bad, I now have more of this problem than I used to as well, especially regarding cig smoke. All of the close CF's I knew that I basically watched decline and die, chemical sensitivity became a much larger issue as they declined.

Laura-I try to always wear a mask when dusting sweeping or cleaning bathrooms and that helps alot. Though I have not yet done it I have been thinking about looking into organic cleaners which I bleieve would also be less irritating to our airways. I dont know if it is an option but I have finally started having my sister come over a few hours a week to do the major items that are irritating which works well for both of us--maybe there is a teen or tween in your area that might be looking for some extra cash?

Almost forgot, yes we also have hardwood and what I do is have my DH or sister do the sweeping and then I use swiffers the other times during the week on high traffic or dust prone areas. I also use a swiffer/mop from home depot where it has a large head with padding and you put on terry cloth towels over the head and you can use them wet or dry this way it is reusable and is much larger surface area--it works great for me and no kicking back items into the air.

So, to answer your question yes it is very possible to get irritated when cleaning and although I havent directly noticed it I am trying to avoid it.
