i had a roommate in college--unfortunately, we did NOT hit it off and basically avoided each other the entire year. However, it was a great way for me to get out into the dorm and really force myself to be super social. I had had dreams of being best friends with my roommate and was crushed when that didn't happen--but it was actually a blessing in disguise--you don't want to be the girl who only hangs out with her roommate! i made some of the best friends of my life in college-- in fact, i'm gonna meet up with my ladies in Portland for Thanksgiving to party with them once more!

My first year, I had a single room, and was just as nervous as you are. But when I got there, I saw that my dorm was set up so that there was another single right next to mine, so that girl and I became "surrogate roomies," which was great!

But I'd echo comments above -- leave your door open, wander into other people's rooms... most people are looking for friends beyond their roommate too, so I'm sure you'll be fine!

I am currently in college and have had a single room for my time here. For me, I find myself getting up in the middle of the night sometimes to do treatments, not sleeping well, and in general have a lot of stuff for a little space. So it was vital for me to have a single. Like some of the other members here have said a suite is a great setup and that's what I have. Ill second everything others are saying and add that its is a great independent feeling and big step to live on your own in the dorms, and to have a single it makes you even a little more self reliant. I would say not to worry about it being an anti-social move to have a single. You will do fine. A word of caution though.... watch out for the communicable germs that fly around dorms. Its an easy way to find yourself getting into some trouble ( I have found out the hard way ). Not trying to be a downer, just something to be cognizant about.
