I did not know I had CF when I entered college so I cant tell you what I did. My opinion though is that I wish I would have known and qualified for help. I got pretty sick during school and there was nothing they could do to help me out. I wish I could have had access to the types of services that LightNlife describes.

Additionally, ask yourself the ? Was it harder for you to get to where you are academically because of your CF? probably Yes. Are there times where your grades achievements etc could have been higher better etc if not for stumling blocks that CF setbefore you? Probably Yes. If so then what is the harm in getting a bit of help back to level the playing field?

Again, let me firstly start off that I don't have CF but another medical condition called Bronchiectasis, which I developed b/c i was born with no immune system called SCID.

OK! Now that THAT'S out of the way ( I don't want to give people any false impressions), i didn't use my health probs to my advantage - i hate looking at it that way - but i AM listed under students with a disability, just incase i ever got sick and wasn't able to complete and assignment on time or write a midterm or exam. At the beginning of each semester I meet with the head person of students with disabilities and we just talk about if anything has changed, and then he gives me letters to hand to each prof telling them that a student in their class (aka moi) has such and such health conditions that may require immediate care (aka ending up in the hospital) but that my health status is currently stable and they will be notified if there is any change.

I have been lucky enough that i haven't been sick since beginng university so i havent really needed the services, though I know this year will be different, what with my lung function and needing tx and all.

I did have to write a small essay I guess you could say, why i felt that university should accept me and I had to state that my medical conditions rarely affected my schooling. That's pretty much about it - it's worth doing it if it's going to help you out!

I didn't use it to get into college. I did use it to get Vocational Rehab to apy for part of it though. They paid $1500/tuition and $300 more torwards books per semester. just an avenue when may want to explore

I didn't use it and I did have roomates all throughout college. I was lucky enough that I had wonderful roomates though who understood everything.

The funny thing was that my roomate (who had ADHD) and I (with CF) were both listed under the disability act and she got exceptions ALL the time and I didn't! I had to actually get hospitalized if I wanted to postpone a test while all she had to do is say she didn't feel like taking it, her ADHD was bothering her. Crazy
