Computer question

My computer is having some problems and the DEll company recommends that I erase my computer and start from fresh.. Obviously I don't want to do that becasue I have so many precious things on my computer including years of conversations with ppl who are no longer here.

THey told me to save on disc anything that is important to me... I have Cd's to burn the files on to but I don't seem to know how to do it. I go into the file. I am hitting save in and then I try to hit CD drive but it says improper action

Does anyone know how to do this...????

Thanks so much

if you have a CD burner on the computer, you should have CD burning software. Something to the effect of "CD writter" etc.

Some computers, when you insert a blank CD will prompt you and ask you what you want to do with the blank CD.

Make sure it's a blank CD, unless you have a CDRW (re-writtable). Most CD's you can just put files on once, and then that's it.

Hope this helps...

WOW.. This is a great question... I've often wondered how to save things I've done online (such as chats) or things in my email onto a CD or thumb drive. I think you're asking if there is a way to get the posts and threads from cysticfibrosis.com saved onto a disk... correct? I have no idea how to do this, but would be greatly appreciative to anyone who does.

Obviously, you should be able to logon and see everything again as soon as your "erased" computer is back online, as even though your computer is reset, it doesn't reset the internet and as long as you use your logon, you should be able to see everything again. Right?

But, I'd still be interested in knowing if you can save things to a disk (i.e. important conversations, emails, etc.) directly off the internet.

Another option is to purchase something called a 'memory stick'...basically it fits into a standard USB port on the back of your hard-drive and you can save whatever you like to it...up to the size of the particular size stick you have purchased e.g. 2mb or whatever.
This is what i used recently when i had to have my pc rebuilt and it was way easier than disks.

I have a re writable CD, so when I want to back something up, I use Sonic (software that burns CD's), go to create DAta disc and go through my hard drive selecting files and programs that I want to keep. I do this periodically in case my computer bites the dust or if it needs to be reformatted, which is what I think DELL is trying to tell you to do Jenn. Is it because of viruses or spyware that your computer is fried? If so, then using updated programs to remove them might help. A good clue that spyware is on your computer is pop ups appearing constantly, computer is running very very slow. The memory stick is a good idea too for backing things up too. Not sure how much memory is on one of those, I guess they vary. Good luck, there is nothing funny about a crashing computer! Another option is to burn onto a DVD. I have alot of pictures on my computer and I burn sections of them onto a cd then all of them for the year onto a DVD. (I mention this because if you have ALOT data it may not all fit and it is easier to do all at once)

you should be able to insert a blank one and software should pop up if things are set up properly. If you only have a CD drive and not a computer capable of burning you are SOL and should go the route of the thumb drive mentioned. YOu can get a 2MB one for under 100 dollars.

Another option is to hire someone to come back up all your stuff for you, my husband has a side business doing this along with other stuff, I am sure there is someone in your area.

If you are not running BOTH adaware/spyware software as well as anti-virus software you really need to get them once your computer is clean. Not only can it cause problems with your computer but it can allow others to 'see' what you are doing online, steal your identity and much worse.

I will try and check back to see if you were successful.

mom2lillian (Nicole) has a good point, I wasn't sure if DVD-R disks were available in the States, yet!

However, you do need a burner software program to mount your data onto the DVD-R. The disk is primarily for movie data, but should offer an option to store data files.
Normally, any burning of DVD-R/RW, or CD-R/RW requires a program to burn it. If your computer has XP, then adding a flash-ram USB would have the drivers so plug-n-play would be easy, and it'd be great to use for important data, but beware-that thing is small enough to be dropped and/or lost. I had one, which I lost one time, it had important data, which I fortunately encripted, but I'm sure the new 'finder' ended up erasing my data to use it for themselves.
If you happen to be SOL with Nicole's suggestion, do they happen to sell HDD drives that connect by USB, or do they have MO drives? The MO drive is about 700MB, similar to the volume for a CD, but more compact in size.

And, yes, when your computer gets acting funky, and if you tried putting in a disk to correct the problem without having to reformat, but it didn't correct the problem, then you will need to reformat! Your E-mail data SHOULD be able to be exported onto another memory device, to be imported when your computer is back on-line. I often have my 'favorites' on a memory stick so I don't have to re-enter all that info when I'm reformatting, or getting a new computer.
Also, if you have wireless security, make sure you have all the info you need to re-install that, I'm sure that data goes when the computer is reformatted.

Hey, Nicole, great idea, I wonder if I can sell myself to backup everyone's stuff, or do a little "In-house Networking". Maybe that'll be something I can do when I return to the States. Already, I'm afraid I may have to do all that reformatting to my computer AGAIN, and have to make a lot of backup disks, first!
