Hey everybody, we had clinic yesterday and Ainsley's lung's sound good, so that's great, she hasn't grown or gained weight and we are going to see the ENT alot sooner because of a post nasal drip problem.
The thing that concerns me most is that Ainsley has funny bm's on and off and I can't seem to relate it to a specific food or lack of enzymes. She also has a pretty big belly. Now she has had this since she was a baby, but she has been on enzymes since last September, so I thought that it would have subsided by now. Also back a month ago, Ainsley was pretty sick, coughing and vomitting. They did a bowel x-ray and saw that she had no blockages but was pretty full of stool. The doc was gonna put her on something for constipation, but I didn't think she needed it since is actually rather loose alot of times, which is my main concern.
Now the thing that bugs me is that they always ask if it's greasy, and it's not. It's just loose, sometimes normal, then loose and messy or just off. I find this frustrating, does she have to have the atypical CF poop for it to be labelled as malabsorption or do abnormal poops also fit into the category.
Sorry to be so graphic, I never thought that I would talk about poop so much in my life but I guess it's part of being a CFmommy. Does anybody have similar frustrations?

The poop issue frustrated me in the beginning 'cuz I'd ask what normal poop looked like and the medical staff would just say "you'll know". No I don't know, that's why I'm asking. Early on DS would still have loose stools, but his tummy would get big and a couple xrays also showed a LOT of stool backed up in the colon. Dr. referred to it as a meconium equivilant and told us to use milk of Mag for a few days.

CF didn't have "normal" poop until he turned 3 and some days -- green cheetos, blue jello... they're abnormally normal.

They always ask us at the clinic if his poop floats. Doesn't ALL poop float. His is rarely greasy. Once in a great while it'd look shiny, but that was a rarity. Mainly when he was formula fed, his stools were yellowish and smelled like feta cheese. Sorry if TMI>

Poops are difficult to figure out when it comes to our CF kids. My older daughters are ALWAYS loose. They have never ever been remotely formed. They are usually very pale looking and stinky!!! I don't see them as much as usual, since she is 9 years old. But once in a while I will go in the restroom and check on her.
This is her normal!

My younger daughters tend to be more formed and not so pale looking. But right now they have been more loose, more frequent and more stinky So this is not her normal, so we are working on changing her enzymes.

Both girls have what I would call a round belly, even though they are thin. It reminds me of ET. My nephew was the same way until he hit his teenage years. So I am hoping that will be the case with the girls, because I know they will not like that belly when they get older!

Katy still has a pot belly, but it has subsided somewhat (we are 10 months into our diganosis). I do have a few thoughts - is Ainsley on an acid blocker (to help the enzymes work more effectively) and have you considered a probiotic like Culturelle? We just started Culturelle for Katy, in the interest of helping her have good gut flora.

If you really wanna talk poop, Katy's changes a lot too. They are mostly formed now that she is on Creon and Prevacid, but boy they can still be really strange! I swear I'm AFRAID every single time I peer into the toilet. What's going to be in there this time? Ah, the joys of mommy-hood.

I hate the inexact science of the enzyme dosing when you've got a kid that will pick at some meals (after you've given the "meal" dose of enzymes) and then eat like a pig other times.
