Confused about Flovent.....

I'm so confused.

My son's ped Dr. just prescribed Flovent for us to try to see if it makes a difference in his coughing. He has coughed ever since he was born. The cough is mainly in the morning, but he will cough throughout the day, activity doesn't seem to increase it.

I know many of the children supported on this board use it. My question is why this was prescribed for a 15 month old when it's states plain as day not to use on children under four, then only to use 1 puff/daily. The Dr. said to use 1 puff for 4 days and if the cough doesn't change to increase it to 2 puffs for 4 more days. If it works he has asthma if not it's something else. Is it really that simple? The side effects include stunted growth, my son can't afford that.

If you remember me my son has had 3 failed sweat tests, and a negative 70-mutation test. We are still trying to get to the bottom of this. At 15 months he weighs 18 lbs 15 oz. We have no family history of asthma so this is a surprise.
Thanks

I don't know how safe Flovent would be in a baby of that age. I will say however, my daughter has taken Flovent since she was a little over 2 years old prior to us finding out she had CF & is still taking it & it was the best thing her cough has ever seen. It didn't take it away completely but it did help her.

Good luck with your little one.

Emily has used Flovent since she was about 9 months old. She gets one puff after each session of PT (albuterol, Hypertonic Saline, Vest, Pulmozyme, Flovent). She coughs only when she has a cold, which is not often (except for during pt - when the goal is to get her coughing). Prior to Flovent, there was mnore of a cough. I think it's a standard CF med, used by alot of kids, and I never really worried much about the side effects. Asthma does run in the family, and two of Em's cousins used Flovent at young ages, but we do not beleive she has asthma - just cf

My daughter has been on Flovent for several years now.... but she is 19 years old.... not what you were asking, I know. But from what I understand it is a drug that will help with the swelling of the very small bronchial tubes in the lungs. In older kids they can do a pre and post PFT (pulmonary function test) to see if you get better numbers after the use of a bronchial-dilator... my guess is your doctor cannot test that theory out with PFT's so he is trying the drug to see if you get a positive result, then he can assume that asthma is playing a part in the symptoms.

But as I'm sure I've told you before (if you posted about having CF symtoms but having trouble getting a CF diagnosis or full genetic testing) that you need to be careful of being told this is asthma only....... my daughter went 8 years with a diagnosis of "asthma with productive cough" when in fact she had asthma with Cystic Fibrosis!!!
