FYI, I'm not an M.D., but I am a veterinarian and see partial and complete intestinal obstructions on a weekly basis so I am pretty familiar with the symptoms.....

Dana,

Has she had any changes in her diet? Changes in her routine? I give my daughter prune juice every day to prevent constipation. I used to give it "straight up" but she got sick of it. Then I would mix half apple juice and half prune juice. She got sick of that, so now we do "prune juice soda". It is half prune juice half caffeine free cola. Sometimes I have to give it to her a little more, if she is constipated.

Some kids just do end up needing miralax every day.

I find that certain things will constipate my daughter. Traveling, vacations, change in diet, things like holiday eating. I really need to stay on top of things to prevent a problem. I make sure she also eats lots of fruit, veggies, dried fruit as well. Occasionally she will need a laxative, like miralax, or milk of mag. My daughter has had two very serious bowel obstructions, once at birth and once at 6 months old, both requiring surgery, so I am totally bowel obsessed. HTH

DS had some issues when he was a baby and when we switched to whole milk. We were able to resolve it by giving him Milk of Magnesia, as per the doctor's instructions. Sometimes they just need some help getting things moving again.

Another issue we dealt with was poop holding. Sometimes DS would associate stooling with discomfort -- messy pants, or just fear of poop (during potty training) and would hold it in, which caused issues as well. Could be that the enzymes are making her feel different. I know when we increased DS enzymes two years ago, he was confused because he wasn't pooping every time he had to use the restroom.

If she starts vomiting, complains of stomach pain, decreased eating, fever, then I would suggest taking her in asap.

At this age, don't overlook the possibility that she could be withholding, too. If it hurt to go the last time she was constipated, she may be anxious about pushing hard enough to really go, even though she's trying. It's a very common thing for 3 and a half year olds.

This is a very common time for kids (especialy girls who were successfully trained early) to develop some potty issues. When Emily was 3 and a half, last summer, she suddenly stopped using the toilet. She peed and pooped like normal, just everywhere exzcept the toilet. Took a very long and frustrating weekend of re-training to figure out that she had developed a fear of things being flushed down the toilet. She collects little objects kind of obsessively, and she had become irrationally (if there is such a thing for a 3 year old) afraid that all of her treasures would be washed away if she sat on the toilet. We had to find some creative ways to ease her fears.

The hard part is deciding what is a physical issue due to CF and what is a normal 3 or 4 year old reaction to a difficult developmental plateau.

If you decide that she just might be withholding from fear, make sure you explain that the miralax (or try another stool softener or a natrual remedy like licorice root (i think? Don't trust me on that!!!) ) is GOING to make it not hurt. That may take the fear away more quickly.

Good luck.
