Coughing blood

it was my 16th yesterday and ohh what a present I recieved, I coughed up pure blood for the first time. It seemed to be a lot but I wasn't to worried since I assumed it was cf-related and quite normal. Its now been going on for a day now and I was just wondering when I should start getting worried and call my doctor, or if there is even a need to.

Happy belated birthday. I'm so sorry you had to deal with hemoptysis. Ugh. If you have just started a new round of inhaled TOBI or other antibiotic, that may have caused the irritation that resulted in the bleed. Are you on pulmozyme? If the bleeding has continued for more than a day and has consistently been only blood and bright red (not blood mixed with mucus) then you need to call the doctor. Try to estimate how much blood you've coughed up because your doctor will ask that.

Hope it all turns out well for you. By the way, welcome to the group! I hope you'll find what you need here in terms of support, education and hope.

Regards,
Lauren

Thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">. I'm not on any inhaled drugs, just hypertonic saline, but only when I have a cold or something so it wasn't anything like that <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

You need to call your doctor. Here's what my CF center tells me. Anything over a cup of bright red blood is a medical emergency. If you are coughing up less, you still need to call the doctor and come up with a plan. He or she needs to know. For example, my plan was to stop airway clearance to allow the bleed to heal. When it didn't heal quickly they put me on oral antibiotics and it stopped bleeding. You need to give them the facts and they will help you figure out what the best course of action is.
