Coughing blood

What a present to receive on your sweet sixteen!

I agree with Melissa...you should call your doctor because this is your first bleed. Call no matter what the amount of blood you coughed up was. You doctor is the best judge on what you should be doing to treat this situation because he knows your medical health best. You might have an infection brewing. Please do not delay and make the call.

Now on another note...I had my first bleed at 18 years old...about a 1/4 cup of bright red blood...and here I am 30 years later still going strong. So don't worry but do call your doctor so that you can stay on top of whatever is brewing.

Let us know how things are going for you.

Go to your Dr. imediatley and don't take any chances, my wife also had her first bout of hemoptysis in last October. She ended up coughing over an estimated 2 pints of blood. She needed a transfusion and later that day they did an embolization because the antibiotics didn't work. So we never take any hemoptysis lightly, we hope you get better and have a happy birthday.

Hey everyone rung my doctor today and he said that if it has stopped then I have nothing to worry about, but if it keeps going I gotta give him another call and it becomes a problem. He said I burst a blood vessel in my lungs from being cold or something (just finished winter here) and I was out all night on my birthday so that pretty much makes sense. Anyway thanks for the help and I'm glad everything turned out good I really didn't wanna go in for a tune!

Audrey,
Happy Birthday , I know hemoptysis can be scary the first time, and since it is all new to you i wanted to let you know not to take it too lightly. We all hate having to go on Iv's but coughing up blood , no matter how common it is in cf, cant ever be a sign of things going at their best. Theres always a reason for the bleeding and you want to get to the bottom of it pronto. I ignored it myself for years figuring it was just part of cf, till 5 years ago i had a masive hemoptysis and almost lost my life to it.
I always put off getting iv's in the past because it is such an inconvenience, and i also got so used to having hemoptysis freequently that i wouldnt even call the Dr. when it would seem like more blood than usual. Please keep an eye on it and dont hesitate to go in for that tuneup if it happens again. You dont want to let it get out of hand.
