Coughing blood

Thanks for your update Audrey. I am glad you called your doctor...but please keep on top of this. I hope it doesn't happen again but if it does please don't delay in calling your doctor. Like Diane says it is better to be treated sooner than later before things get more advanced.

Hope you have a great school year.

A bit of a necro bump here, but I just wanted another opinion and ask about my own situation.

I coughed up a fair amt of blood earlier today (maybe 1/4c?) not a lot for some of you, I know.. and it went away. Yes it was pure blood. Tonight I laid down and felt the familiar gurgle and went and coughed up roughly the same amount again. It seems to have stopped for now.

I guess my questions are
- when should I call the doc (you guys say 1c+ or 1day+?)
- could this be the same bleed or two different ones, maybe?
- what does the doc do if it is a "serious" bleed? I mean I know about embolizations... are they very commonly used, or just a last resort kind of thing? Do doctors tend to wait it out, or jump right into fixing it?

Thanks a lot. Just awake at 5am, gurgling, coughing, reading Nate's blog, and not much else to do.

Edit: No, I have not started any new meds, or anything like that. I didn't have a bad coughing spell either. The bleed just kind of came out of the blue.

sevenstars-every center seems to have a different protocol but for me fresh blood in that quantity would mean I would page my doctor (I personally would wait about an hour to see if it stopped or increased) and they would tell me if it was just once and done to come to clinic next day but if it hadnt stopped to go to ER. Even though I may feel pretty good hwen a bleed happens it is their opinion that there is infection/inflammation further down that is causing the bleeding and it is best to treat it with antibiotics.

happened to me this morning too.(not the first time ever, but second time in 2 mornings) i woke up and coughed up whatever was stored while sleeping and at first it was kinda bright red with mucous... but as i kept spitting more out the colour dissipated and it turned back to it's regular color. i just started tobra a couple days ago, and i'm on cipro and novo-trimel orally.
i'd say the blood was less than or equal to 1/4 cup.
any ideas?
