Coughing Fits

Another thing also helps. Dr. Warwick says to stop a coughing fit, simply hold your breath.

Granted...a few coughs will escape despite holding your breath, but it does help you regain control.

Hi,
Sorry you're feeling yucky. I learned this technique from a breathing exercise video for CFers once. The RT on the video said when you start having that paroxysmal coughing, just take fast and shallow breaths through your nose. Eventually the urge will diminish and you can have control of your breathing/coughing.

I use this a lot when I'm in a place where I don't want to be having a huge cough attack in front of everyone. Once the urge passes, I can give a regular cough to clear the airways without it turning into a cough attack.

Try it somtime!

This website helped me. I knew to cough this way, but had forgotten. I spoke to my Dr. and he called in some Cipro. Hopefully this will help but if not I will see him next week.

This may sound weird, but sometimes when I can't stop coughing, I do a light "growl" .. Yes, I growl like a little puppy doggy for a little bit and it helps. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">
