Just wondering if there is anything i can do to make the cough stop at night so i can sleep? the last few nights have been HELL. I am up for a few hours a night trying to get my cough and mucus under control. I do my nebs and best before bed at about 9pm and then at about 2 or 3 i wake up gagging and coughing. I take combivent a few times and it still wont stop this goes on for an hour or more. What do you do to help settle yourself down so you can sleep again? My husband has been sleeping in the other room because he can't sleep through all the noise. I feel so bad for him. My cough goes from dry to super mucus to just spit like i would assume is like an asthma attack and i can barely catch my breath. Do i need a different drug or cough med? Please help!!

I know that this may not be the right thing to do, but I take cough medicine when I can't stop coughing at night. When I am losing sleep, I get sick so much faster and definitely can't get well. So if I have one bad night, then I take cough meds the next night, and just work doubly hard during the day to get the junk out. Not sleeping is the greater of two evils for me. Usually when I'm coughing that much at night, it means I need antibiotics.

Have you tried proping yourself up on some pillows to sleep? I know for me certain positions make me cough more, or when I'm starting to get sick. Sometimes I have a lot of trouble with sinus drainage and that's always the worst cough to get rid of because it turns into a dry tickle in the back of my throat. Like Jenny said when it gets to the point where I'm not getting much sleep of a couple of days I usually take Nyquil at bed, it's harder to fight off anything when you're not getting enough rest. Have you given you're doctors a call about your increased cough?

I'm with Jenny on this one. I know we're not really supposed to suppress our cough because you don't get anything out that way, but sometimes I feel like I don't have a choice. My night time cough is just a dry hacking that doesn't stop all night. I figure if I suppress a cough that isn't productive anyway, I'm not doing too much harm. Or that's how I justify it to myself, anyway! I had a prescription cough syrup with codine, but it didn't do much good, so I stick with good old fashion Nyquil. Most of the time it works, although I've had nights were it doesn't even help and I just cough and cough. I hope someone else can come up with some good answers.

Agreed! Cough Meds are good, using pillows also works for me too. But have you ever tried doing another albuterol treatment when you wake up coughing? Or do you use a rescue inhaler? A couple puffs of that could help the constriction. I'm not sure if you have ever tried Symbicort. I use it instead of Advair. I love it because it helps me get rid of my wheezing at night. & if i ever wake up coughing I do 2 puffs of Symbicort & i'm back asleep within 15 minutes!

You might want to try a Neti Pot (rinse out your sinus with salt water) it works for me when nothing else will!!

If its really bad I take cough medicine-robitussin DM. My doc has told me that as long as I'm faithfully doing my chest pt during the day a little cough med at night is fine if I'm desperate. (not every night)
Now that I'm prego I don't take it though.
I do a neti pot before bed also which is so helpful. I use an extra pillow-plus I try to use really soft comfy pillows bc I think they relax me more which helps.
If I wake up from persistent coughing, I get up and try to hack it out. Then I go downstairs and mix very hot water with 1 tbl honey and drink that down. Then I eat a handful of salty chips or crackers.
It works everytime and I sleep the rest of the night.
