Coughing Up Blood After Prednisone

Hi,
Here's the story. September 18th, I coughed up blood for the first time in recent memory. I was freaked out, and called my clinic the next morning, who prescribed me Septra/Augmentin oral abx (2 weeks) and a 6 day burst of Prednisone to stop the bleeding. I did, and it stopped, by Wednesday of that same week. I didn't get better, and finished the Septra/Aug a few weeks ago. I had massive tightness of breath last Wednesday, and called to have them represcribe Septra/Augmentin, since I wasn't better, and they also represcribed Prednisone. I've been doing my vest 3 times a day since Thursday, up from 1-2. I finished the Pred today; last night, I began coughing up blood streaked sputum. Tonight, I'm coughing up pure blood. Not losing blood in massive quantities, but I am a bit worried that the Prednisone didn't stop it, and that it started at the end of the Prednisone. Any advice? I'm going to call my clinic tomorrow, but I would like some words of advice now.
Thank you,
Mariah

Hi Mariah, I've posted on here before about bleeding. I had regular bleeds for the last 20 years, I've 5 embolization operations to stop it so they've ranged from really severe to just some streaks. I just had a little bleed the other night. Through research and trial and error I've discovered some things that help prevent and even stop the bleeding, and also that hemoptysis is not well studied and understood or treated by CF doctors. Putting me on antibiotics or steroids often doesn't help me, though it could help you. It's typically raw scar tissue breaking a leak where the arteries attach, at least for me. Streaking can be from that or from busting a small capillary.
So here's my tips, if bleeding is a common occurrence try:
vitamin K, namely mephyton And CF Source softgels, these have a little more vitamin K than the ADEK vitamins. They're in water soluble form so we absorb it faster. The vitamin K helps aid our bloods clotting ability.
Probiotics - I take capsules from Jarrows that equate to 10-billion cells. They're not cheap, but they're good for us for multiple reasons. Namely they actually help our body absorb the vitamin K.
I've noticed a delayed bleed several hours after being exposed to strong chlorine fumes, this could be from an indoor pool, bleach or a mop bucket in some bathroom. This was from trial and error. I don't think you're case is quite as severe, but if you start bleeding more try to notice what you've done or been exposed to that day.

To help stop a bleed in its tracks, this one will sound a little weird. But cayenne pepper powder. I had another CFer recommend this years ago, and I've had many occurrences where it worked like a miracle, stopping a bad bleed in 10 seconds. What I do is sprinkle about 1/8 tsp, or a dash, in some warm water and chug. I recommend the hot stuff you may find at a natural food store, but regular stuff should do fine at first. I got used to the spice pretty quickly. Supposedly this works by dilating the blood vessels in your body which in turn decreases the pressure of the blood coming into the lung.
That's about it I think. Let me know if you have any questions.

erock 77 - i think that this is the reason for the blood in my case - scar tissue breaking away and causing a bleed. have had fair bit and also small bits - but it seems to happen more if i am more active - i think that as i have restricted lungs due to upper lobe collapse when i exert myself it causes more oxygen to be carried to the lungs to deal with the exertion and this prob causes the blood vessels to inflate and therefore can break. What on earth can you do about this - i agree it can be infection too which would inflame an area - and just inflammation on its own - but if you have the scarring how do you deal with that - it wont go will it. I was told once that Rutin can strengthen the capiliaries - think it in Vit C or is it Vit B - sorry cant remember - but you can also get it on its own.
I was wondering erock 77 did the embos not really work then - when you have these the blood obviously has to find another route so is it likely to still occur. also i was just wondering how you have coped with this over the years - i find it v difficult - i have ocd and this tends to make it worse as i feel i have to constantly check it - which isnt a good idea. How do you deal with life generally socialising etc. or working if you do - do people know that you have this problem. I found when i was working that i felt i couldnt tell anyone - they wouldnt understand and so i was often v depressed and people wondered what was wrong with me. I feel i could cope with the other lung stuff but this is just something that i feel i cant deal with. And yes i have had counselling - maybe helped a bit - but that initial fear is always a cough away.

Did you speak with your Cf clinic or dr. today, what are they suggesting for treating blood.

are they trying a different abx?

Caza..... Rutin has the C, but E is supposed to be good for external scars, by softening tissue and making it more supple. but I dont know if it can help internal tissue scars...

Breethe Free posted weeks ago about a herb that works well for him and his sister to stop bad hemoptysis called .... Gotu Kola....its supposed to help strength capillaries and veins...

he had 2 embos I believe before trying it....and you could ask if your clinic uses TA transexamic acid, my clinic calls it cyklokapron....500 mg pills....that helps some people...

if you have hemoptysis from infection you want to get on abx asap....and maybe add TA with abx...
