coughing

for the past few nights, i've been up the entire night just coughing. i cough during the day, but just my normal cough. soon as i lay down, my throat gets that irritating, tickling feeling that makes me cough. why does that happen at night and not during the day? i've been taking nyquil although my doctor doesn't want me taking any kind of cough suppressant. if i don't though, i won't get a wink of sleep.

have you tried keeping a glass of water next to your bed and taking a few sips when you feel that tickle?

I sometimes get that itchy feeling at night but I eventually fall asleep. I haven't had it keep me up all night though it is very difficult to acctually fall asleep.

Sorry I couldn't help more

Not sure if this makes any sense as to why it would work, but I keep very strong mints next to my bed for times like this. Like Altoids, or Eclipse mints. I swear they work better than cough drops or anything, and after I eat them, my throat is kind of numb. Also, I use a ton of pillows so that I'm not laying anywhere near flat. Took me a while to get used to the position, but it really does help with that tickle-cough for me. I hope you find something that works for you!

When I get that, it's usually from my sinuses draining down the back of my throat. Cough drops, Astiln nasal spray (prescription) or Afrin sometimes help with that. I've also heard that honey helps for the cough- that's what my mom used to give me .
When I have a bad cold that is causing that, sleeping propped up helped alot for me too. My dh likes to sleep in his recliner instead of using pillows when he gets that way . I hope you get some good sleep soon!
