Alisha,
I just had a baby on February 23. I am 32 years old and got pregnant when my FEV1 was at 80%. At the moment my FEV1 is 66%. Although this will be my only pregnancy and it was really rough on me healthwise during the pregnancy (hospitalized 3 times), it was worth the end result, my precious Alex. We did the adoption thing the first time around. Chris is 4 now, and worth all the emotional ups and downs we endured. No matter what you decide to do, there will be hardships, health or emotional, but the babies are worth it. I sincerely hope my FEV1 goes back up to 80%, but we shall see. Oh and amazingly, I am not exhausted now that the pregnancy is over. I feel a ton better and enjoying my baby boy.

When I started my pregnancy, I was not in my top health. I had been losing weight (5'1", 100 lbs), and lung function (67%). During weeks 5-7 of pregnancy I was very sick with a flu-like illness and needed IVs. The whole pregnancy started off on the very wrong foot. The doctors (CF and OBGYNs) had me scared, and questioning what I was doing. But my health steadily improved throughout the whole pregnancy. I had my highest FEV1 in 2 years in my 7th month of pregnancy (84%). I gained 35 or so lbs and have been healthy ever since. My son was born vaginally on his due date and weighed 8 lbs 1 oz. He was healthy and strong. My son is 15 mos now. I'm still nursing him. I weigh more than I ever have (aside from being pregnant). And I am so happy that I have the opportunity to live my life dream of having a family. Not being healthy is just not an option. I do all my treatments and more every day, because I have a son to raise with a husband I love!

Overall, my experience was very positive and Cf did not negatively affect my pregnancy, and the pregnancy did not negatively affect my CF!

I had a very uncomfortable pregnancy, nothing major health wise but nothing was easy. I was exhausted and ended up working PT (5.5hrs/day) the last couple months and then taking off of work 5 weeks before my due date and I was still exhausted. I had borderline gestational diabetes from week 11 which I controlled via diet without incident, horrible migraines bad enough I conceded to medicating them, constant 'morning sickness' for two months, I had a bleed @19weeks, started contracting @20weeks, started terbutaline for contractions around 24 weeks etc etc.

I really dont think any of that was CF related though so on to that. The first trimester I had MASSIVE amounts of mucous, I thought I was sick and went to clinic in beginning before I realized all mucous was pregnancy related. I was only mildly compliant before or during my pregnancy. I had one round IV's at ~7months. I didnt have a significant dip in PFT's during and I have improved afterward. My doc didnt think I'd make it until thansgiving but I made it to my due date and had to be induced, I delivered DD perfectly healthy @6.5lbs. I am PS and have 100% FEV1 now though I think pre-pregnancy I was bouncing arouind low 90's.

I guess I dont understand with 85% PFTs and blood doctor not being concerned why they would deter you unless we are missing a piece of the puzzle? I would work my butt of while on IV's with LOTS extra treatments and excercise to get in as good of shape as possible. A really intensitve tune-up pre-pregnancy is a great idea, I did it the first time around and am going to doc this week to see if we should this time around.

All that being said I think that if you are the type of person that gets run down easily or isnt able to cope with changes well then the pregnancy is more likely to be problematic. Truly there is just NO way to tell even from pregnancy to pregnancy. I was preggo 1st time 1 month apart from a friend she did fantastic the first time, now she is having a rough 2nd pregnancy. I on other hand am hoping to anticipate problems this time and do much better! (one can hope right <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">).

I cant over state how true the others statements are about the pregnancy being the easy part. I felt better after birth since I didnt fare realy well being pregnant and I still have to say being pregnant was a breeze compared to the care of my DD and she was an 'easy' baby. Its not even the care of them its not being able to do what you want when you want with your treatmetns and sleep etc but finding ways to stay compliant etc it is very very tiring.

I wish you the best of luck.

one thing I can say against you not carrying the baby is I truly think being pregnant got me ready for DD. If I had went from sleeping great etc etc to having her I would have been in a world of hurt and surrise but I think I was getting more sleep than I was at end my pregnancy between discomfort and bathroom trips so I think that was my 'sleep training' so to speak.
