Craving Carbs
Reduce and eliminate carbs?? That doesn't sound safe especially with hypoglycemia. Carbs are the only thing that will bring a person out of hypoglycemia.

I am wishing I would have never posted this question. I was just wondering if this was a normal thing or not.

Well, biologically we are wired to like (or crave) 3 things, sugar, fat and salt. This is a result of evolution and our diet, which only 50-100 years ago was drastically different than it is now. So, the occasional craving of any of these things it to be expected. While I'm not a nutritional expert, I have heard it suggested that if you do eat carbs, try to eat it with something that metabolizes a little more slowly. This way you don't get that BSG spike and subsequent dropout. An example would be a baked potato with sour cream and butter (more calories too for those of you trying to bump your BMI).

I shouldn't have said no carbs - I guess I meant refined carbohydrates. There is some evidence out there that lowering ones carb intake can help control hypogylcemia. I'm not looking to start a debate I was only asking a question.

I didn't mean to upset you mamerth and I'm sorry if I did so.

Hey Mamerth,

I have CFRD and started out just trying to restrict carbs and keep off of insulin. Then, I needed to gain weight and agreed to go on a appetite stimulant and insulin just for a three week period. I never went off the insulin because I liked it! I liked being able to eat carbs when I wanted to and getting that quick energy sometimes that my body needs... without feeling guilty. Plus, fast acting insulin is easy. May I ask why you are averse to using insulin?

I honestly have no idea why your body is craving carbs, but it could possibly be that you need more quick caloric energy than you are getting. The CFF does not recommend restricting carbs even if you have CFRD for this reason.

Just an idea.

I tried insulin and Metformin when I was first diagnosed with CFRD. My diabetes doctor discovered that I don't need the insulin unless I am on hard core antibiotics or prednisone. I am on a restricted carb diet because I am trying to loose a touch of weight with my nutritionist and diabetes doctors help.

I am heading to a clinic appointment. I will see if I can modify my diet even just a touch with my doctors help. See if we can fit in a few more "healthy" carbs.

As I've been told by my dietion all my life when you mix food IE carbs + protean you won't get the massive blood sugar spike you would expect if you just eat the carbs. FYI if your craving something its not a bad idea to indulge some, its your bodies way of telling you "hay you need something in this..." Just don't over do it and be smart about mixing it with something that won't move though your system so fast.

Hey Carrie,

I am like you, kinda borderline, not yet needing insulin except if Im on steroids. I do notice there have been times when I drop that I eat every carb I can get my hands on.. I haven't discussed this with my endo & probably should.. Hope someone can shed some light on the situation ..

Take care joni

I talked with my endo doc. She told me to go ahead and eat a bit more carbs when I get a craving but to eat protein with it and to watch for a dip in sugars later. Yep, Joni, I am borderline. My endo is hoping I can stay this way for quite a while with my strict carb counting diet. She did not give me permission to up my carbs on a regular basis... upping my carbs can only be for special occasions (holiday and such). She says that my tight control of carbs will help me tons to stay off the insulin and metformin.

I guess my blood work comes out just wonderful when I am disciplined and eliminate the sweets.

BTW... I did get an orange julius and.... I didn't like it. I think I would have been happier with a 4-6 once glass of frothy orange juice. I learned my lesson!! She did say I can eat the canned peaches (in their own juice) with a balanced meal... not alone.
