CRAZY MOTHER SUMMER QUESTIONS

<DIV>Hi there,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Okay here are my new "Crazy Mother" Questions for this summer. My lil Man is about to turn 4 and the baby pool is not cutting it anymore.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>1. Do any of you allow your children to play in plastic inflatable backyard pools. I have been totally relaxed with pools/ocean, but I have been a stickler with his baby pools in the past. I use to drain/wipe down every night. Can I really relax and let him go up to the next size pool? Will the "filter" and $20 chlorine thing do it's job? I'm freaking out! It's going to drive me nuts not to dump the water every night. I know I'm crazy but I have always taken precautions with his water play. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>2. I can't remember this but what are some of your views on well-water? We are going to Eastern Washington next month and I'm sure all the kiddie pools and those monster inflatables/w slides will be flowing. Should I just relax and let him go for it? I know next year I'm not going to have a choice. I'm very laid back on everything else.....Just this one topic! Thanks Again</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Thanks, Sarah</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Mommy to Johnny almost 4 w/cf and bailey 1 in a half no/cf</DIV>

<P>I'm not sure about that particular filter type, but as long as the levels are good, it's fine to swim in. We even swim in lakes and ponds as long as they aren't murky and stagnant.  Swimming is one of the best exercises for someone with CF. Well water is perfectly fine. We have well water at our house. </P>
<P>Relax and have fun!</P>

As long as you get the little testers that tell you if anything is growing in the water and test it regularly you should be fine!!!

I know its stressful to think about water and what grows in it, but the bottomline to all of this is that when a CF patient's lungs are at a point where the bad bugs can grow, they will. It has very little to do with whether you let them swim in lakes (reasonable, normal healthy levels of bacteria -- not swamps or stagnant ponds) or keep them in a bubble. I know that we CF parents have a tendency to jump towards overprotective because there is so little about this disease we can control, but I think its important to keep the perspective and let him have fun. If its safe for the other kids his age and his doctor doesn't feel that extra precautions are necessary, it all sounds like good, clean fun to me!!

First, the title of your thread made me laugh. I'm glad I'm not the only "CRAZY MOTHER" out there!

We have one of those "pop up" pools with the inflatable ring around the top, if that's what you are referring to. Emily has been in it more often than out of it the last few weeks. We do have a filter, a pump to keep water moving, we use "SHOCK" (buy it where the pools are sold) to cut down on the bacteria, we test the PH regularly and we skim it before and after every use. Emily also takes lessons at a community pool, we swim at two different man-made ponds, and when we camp she swims in the lake. At the lakes, we check the bacteria levels with the local DNR - if it's crazy bad we ALL stay out. Yuck.

Heather is right. I could be ultra cautious and NOT let Emily swim - ever, or I can watch her confidence grow, watch her grin from ear to ear, watch her skills and strength increase every time she gets in the water. She may pick up a "bug" in either case, but I'd rather she get to experience the latter.

I know it's hard, but I really think you can relax a bit on this one and let him go for it!!! Enjoy your summer!

Oh, I probably should add that I'm just paranoid enough that I increase her treatments and sinus rinses during swimming season! See, I'm CRAZY too! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
