Update -- July 30th.... We are HOME!!! YAY! her culture from the Bronch came back clear but with round remnants (??? I'm sure I have this wrong) which my doctor feels indicates that we aren't dealing with pseudomonas (those remnants are rods??) but that she probably had an overgrowth of staph, but since we were 6 days into IVs by the time of the bronch that all we had left was the excess mucus.

We've got 2 weeks left of IVs, but are doing them from home. They sent us home with the eclipse IV balls. This is new for us --- but they seem terrific!!!!!

Thanks for all the support!!

*************************
UPDATE 7/29 Culture isn't back yet -- but the bronch revealed a lot of gunky mucous (shocking, huh?). I know he got a good culture, so it should get us some info. Her cough is finally decreased a great deal today. So fingers crossed we'll go home with IVs soon

********************

UPDATE: She's still coughing on day 6 of IVs now. Bronch is scheduled for the am. I'm nervous of what they will find, and equally nervous that they won't find anything and we won't have a plan to help her.

*********************

What does this mean? Does it mean that they just didn't get a good enough culture? Pulm thinks so and said that if there is no turnaround by monday we are scheduling a bronch. What else could she be culturing besides her normal staph that timentin and tobra aren't getting to?? Would she have any other symptoms besides a cough if it were pseudomonas? No fever, no malaise, though she isn't eating much....

I'm hating the hospital. And she is pretty bored. But DH brought the Wii over today, so that is helping!!! We got a pass to go out to dinner tonight, so I'm looking forward to that.

You may have already mentioned this, and I didn't go back through old posts to check... and I really don't remember, but, Have they done a check of Alyssa's sinuses? I ask because it was Emily's persistent and increased cough that didn't respond to any abx (for long, anyway) that led us to get the sinus scope/culture and eventually surgery.

In her case, the e.coli that was growing in her sinuses (along with staph p.)was enough to aggravate her cough. The sinuses were never clear, so there was always drainage down her throat that started the cough. At first, we really couldn't tell sinus issues for what they were (and neither could the ped. or pulm.).

You've probably already explored this issue, but I thought I'd toss it out there.

Good luck. Please PM me your address. This hospital stay calls for a little care package from Emily!

there's a host of bacteria that tobra and timentin wouldn't touch.

<br />A bronch sounds like a very smart idea.....

Tami -- thanks, your response if very helpful. I will ask the pulm tomorrow if we could culture her sinuses as well. I've definitely tossed around in my mind that this might be sinuses too. She only sounds junky in her lungs WHEN she is coughing, otherwise no one can hear a thing through the stethascope. That alone has made me wonder if we've got sinus issues going. So knowing what sweet Emily has been through makes this theory make even more sense.

Amy -- I do agree that a bronch makes good sense. I hadn't thought about those yucky bacterias, but you are right -- there is a host of yuckiness that could be in there.
