Culture Update

I've been on OO cap's for 3 weeks and inhaled OO for 2 weeks. I've seen a drastic reduction in mucus production. Seems like I can keep up at aerobics class better without getting as winded and I don't cough as much when exerting. My general day in, day out cough is about the same. My sinuses have bled for the 1st time in my life in the last month - only presents when I blow my nose so it's definitely clotting fast. Probably not related but thought I'd mention it. I feel good. I sometimes do 'practice' pfts and I feel like I am doing better than my usual. I'm excited to go to get my pft's done in ~6 wks. I'm definitely sticking with it until I prove it not good (for me) or someone else does. The last two days it's been a bit burning as I inhale it - might back off to 3 drops. I've mentioned on another post that I new bumps on the roof of my mouth. Some have suggested this might be thrush. Could be my new CF doc. puts his patients on Bactrim to fend off bugs - says it's an umbrella. This practice make me uncomfortable but I haven't gotten sick while on it so maybe it is killing intruders. I also got bad fissues down there and started taking acidopholis pills 2x/day to help keep the good flora around that the Bactrim is killing. I don't this would be necessary with only the OO. I'll find out soon because I don't think I'll keep doing the 'umbrella' drugs for much longer. Anyone else on pre-cautionary oral antibiotics?

Sean thanks for posting your results. Sounds to me like you have a definite improvement in how you physically feel, better lung function, but yeah it would be nice to be rid of the pseudo and staph. But overall the experiment proved to be successful in that you have a generally positive outcome.

You may remember I posted a while back about my 4 yr old daughter's problems with recurrent/debilitating staph infections. Well she finished her last round of antibiotics (keflex, which did eventually clear it, though she is chronically colonized with it) a few weeks ago, and we have been giving her 1-2 small oil of oregano gel caps daily since (not nebulized, I think it would be too harsh for a little kid). She has had two consecutive colds (from sister at school), but the stuff she coughs up is always white now, not green like usual for her. To me this is a good sign. She has a clinic next week, so I will know a week after that what she is growing (last culture she only had aspergillus - a fungus, which didn't seem to be bothering her). When Chrissy first started taking the OO she coughed and cleared out more stuff than usual, like I've heard others describe.

Anyway thanks for suggesting the OO; it's been definitely worth trying and I think it is doing some good. We're going to look into hypertonic saline too; the two things combined sound pretty potent to me.

take care

I personally don't believe in "umbrella" or prophalactic antibiotics. They can help for periods of time and make you feel better, but if you stay on them for any decent period of time, most cystics are likely to develope a resistance to that line of antibiotics. I was on tobi for maybe 3 years (still got sick while on it), under the typical one month on @ twice a day, and one month off. I developed a resistance to tobramycin. I personally would rather use something that helps me keep my bugs down, and doesnt develope a resistance, so when I do REALLY get sick, I have those lines of drugs to help me and I have no resistances.

Good luck. I personally think if strong natural antimicrobials like say oregano oil were introduced into our foods and taken as supplements at a younger age before we became chronically colonized, many of us might be different today. I could probably nebulize pure lysol (im sure it would kill me or mess me up bad) which is known to kill 99.9% of everything, and it probably still wouldnt be able to get rid of my pseudo, because im 35 and have had pseudo for a very long time. So the fact that the OO did indeed appear to drop my pseudo levels, and raise my PFT's and raise how I feel, I think the experiment was indeed a success. As I said before, i'm gonna "turn it up a notch" with regards to treating my lung bugs with natural substances, and see if by my next visit, if it has removed some stuff or lowered my levels even more. I'm not giving up, giving up = death.

I was just hoping the results would show nothing, and i'd 100% purpue the whole work thing. Just gonna have to think more on that now.

Ok you might not like this what I have to say but listen here folks

There are nasty germs all over besides going into hospitals but there you know there are bugs and not all hospital staff takes the best precautions. I say not to worry as worry can cause your germs to grow. After laying in a hospital bed for too long to mention, I became desenitized to germs. I actually do not worry about catching things but I do not go near people if I know they are sick.

I know someone on this board once biting their toe nails *ahhhemmm clearing my throat excuse me* Make sure you scrub your toe nails good before you bite them. Don't think you cannot get fungus into your lungs or mouth from your feet.

I always keep my tooth brush soaked in listerine or a good antibacterial mouth wash and buy a new tooth brush head every couple of months. There are places on our bodies that can carry on over into our lungs

Eating sugary foods can breed fungus and I am sure if there is a fungus in your lungs cutting down on the sugar will help a lot.

Hope this helps even if you do not believe this could be true.

I had the serratia too, but it was gone after 3 weeks of oral Ciprobay.
I also looked up the internet and found out, that people thought it was doing no harm, so they used the serratia for testings...In the USA they even spread it with planes (can´t remember for what reason) and afterwards they found out, that many people in that regions got urinal infections of it, so they stopped the testings...

Yup. The military was using the stuff as a "safe" model for biological weapon scenarios. They filled up large balloons with the serratia and then sent them over san francisco and popped them to study where the stuff went. Then all of a sudden people started developing urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections, so they realized it wasn't so safe. They used to also use the stuff in schools in bacteria broth, to demonstrate how bacteria spreads via handshakes and the like. One kid would put his hand in the bacteria rich broth, and then shake a hand, then that person would shake a hand, then another, then another and they would see how bacteria spreads.

Also they call it the "holy bacteria" because a long time ago it infected some bread of a pope, and that pope thought it was the blood of jesus, and called everyone around to eat the bread in a ceremony, and proclaimed some silly special day in it's honor.

The thing about Serratia, it's in many many people walking around, I don't think it will cause me any probs.

My doctor wasn't all that concerned about what was in my culture because I feel so good with so high PFT's.

That's wild about Serratia, I've never heard of it.

One thing your first post made me think of is that the oil is of course not a cure, so to not get down just because you have some other news stuff. It is CF. But when you said your hope is that any bugs you do have or get you want them to show up very light in the culture due to the oil fighting them off. I think that's a great perspective and goal, and one that is incredible if the oil really works that way. If the OO ends up being a knight in shining armor, without causing harm down the road like some people have cautioned, then maybe it could extend ones life. You had similar PFTs as me before you started the oil, and to think you are now at 99%! I didn't know that would ever be possible. I BET you feel good!

Well, Cheers (yes, it's 11AM) and here's to you keeping those bugs in the down low.

The current benefits that you are feeling from oregano oil are probably due to its strong anti-inflammatory affects. When you reduce inflammation, mucous production is reduced and better breathing results. Oregano oil, as you know, is also antibiotic, antifungal, etc. Your light cultures are most likely testament to OO antimicrobial benefits. I think that through longer use, you will see a further reduction in bacteria counts. Just my opinion based on research.

Yeah I agree. My culture before the OO, before i was sick, was "light", now it's "very light" regarding all my bugs, and the serratia was classified as both "rare" for it being there, and "rare" for the amount that was there. Also the staph was classified as "very light". Granted I have two more bugs now than before, but i'm certain that was from the hospital and nothing else. I was very irresponsible in the hospital, and treated it like my bedroom with regards to not paying any attention to proper sanitation that I should have been practicing. Next time I go in (I hope that will never come due to how I feel now), I'm gonna be a germ nazi.

And yeah, you are right about OO's massive antiinflamatory abilities. I was starting to show cystic related arthritis, and I had full blown gout. My joints at times would be pretty painful, and i'd pop and crack all over the place when I would walk. After doing the OO for just a little while, my gout 100% went away (something cocicene and alopurinol couldnt do, in heavy doses) and my joints are now like they were when I was in my teens. The fact that my bad flora went way down in numbers, my PFT's went way up, I feel amazing, and i've only had two lung bleeds in 6 months (as opposed to having them regularly), i'd say the OO works and then some. I thank my sister all the time for tipping me in it's direction, because without her tipping me off to it, I might either be dead or in much worse shape.

I don't know if it will work the same for everyone, but I hope it does, and that's why I tell everyone to give it a try for a month and see how they feel in general. Considering what's at stake, a month trying something new isn't much to take a gamble on.
