An article about this bug: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/228495-overview">eMedicine: Serratia</a>

Has he been in the hospital? It seems to be one that can be spread there. He's still really little... if he had any invasive procedures after birth due to complications of his cf he also could have contracted it then. It used to be considered a 'harmless' bug but was eventually found to be an opportunistic pathogen that can cause various types of infection, including that of the respiratory tract.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>...the Augmentin prescribed by his regular ped would not clear this up.</end quote></div>
This is one of the most important reasons to stay in touch with the cf center whenever our little ones get sick. When they culture our kids, not only do they want to determine what they are growing, but they then figure out what abx it is sensitive to- so when they get sick, they know what to prescribe. The ped doesn't, in most cases, have the benefit of this information.

I hope tomorrow's appt goes well and they can get little Sam feeling better really soon. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>I have felt some crackles in his ribs, so the CF team urged us to come in tomorrow. They also said he might have to be admitted if the chest x-ray showed a need for a bronschopy.

(then later added he doesn't have a cough...)</end quote></div>
I wanted to add the recent experience of my 10yr old son, who doesn't have CF but is now recovering from a nasty respiratory infection secondary to a virus. He had a little cold; sick maybe 4 days and only missed 2 days of school due to fever at the outset. He seemed completely better and had been back to school for two days with ZERO cough, energy back, etc. Then what would have been a week after the outset of his symptoms he woke up and couldn't take in a deep breath without pain and had a weird rasp when he forced a big breath. Zero cough- he said he couldn't. The ped told me he had a lot of junk in both lungs and the noise she could hear when he was breathing was spasm & inflammation in his large airways.

He had no upper respiratory congestion to account for any of it. It can come out of nowhere with NO cough as warning... in his case he could feel 'stuff' as he put it and wanted to cough but could not until he had a course of Decadron to reduce inflammation. (He is of course on abx now too and I am holding my breath Emily does not catch this.) If it can take our healthy kids out so quickly like this, even more so our kids whose lungs are already compromised. I am so glad he's seeing his dr tomorrow.

My daughter cultured it last year. 14 days of IV antibiotics later she was just fine and we haven't seen it since. We got no major warnings about it....i think it is just one to add to the list!
