Culturing Pseudomonas AGAIN!!!

I'm so bummed. Addie cultured Pseudomonas about 1.5 years ago, and has been great since her round of Tobi/Cipro. But our last appt, the throat swab grew Pseudomonas.

UGH, what are we doing wrong? We're totally compliant with her treatments, albuterol twice a day, Pulmozyme once a day, and the vest. We don't skip treatments, she's not in daycare, doesn't swim in lakes or public pools... It feels like we're taking all the precautions and it doesn't matter.

Any suggestions on how to keep Pseudomonas away? I know it's everywhere, but are there tricks to prevent it? Thanks in advance. Elise

Pseudomonas is in our environment in some many places. For instance, it can be found in bagged salads (this was even in the news last year.),in pets, so many places (like you noted). The question is what is the correlation beteween finding it in the throat and then the lungs? And does Addie have any symptoms? It is believed that Pseudomonas never really is erradicated -- it keeps popping it's head up. So that is why sometimes it isn't treated, because if someone doesn't have any symptoms and they go on antibiotics -- it can come back anyway. And I have also read that other doctors treat the first appearance of Pseudomonas very aggressively.

The bigger question is how do keep Pseudomonas from doing any harm? And that is to keep inflammation to a minimum (many tricks to this), keep airways open, and by making sure the mucus doesn't stay in the lungs.

You're definitely not doing anything wrong - as I'm sure you know, the vast majority of CFer's have PA.

Sadly it's just the nature of the disease....

I am sorry to that. It sounds like you are doing everything right. Unfortunately, going PA in (almost) inevitable. It is a relatively new idea to try to prevent PA from going in the lungs of CFers when they first grow it. I know that wasn't the philosophy when I was a kid. Just keep doing everything you are doing. Even if Addie is growing PA, doing all of the treatments is very important in keeping her symptoms free.
