curcumin (tumeric)

My daughter has been using Curcumin for almost a year now and we have had some remarkable improvements. Mainly in the area of gastrointestinal. She is no longer using enzymes and has regular bowel movements - she is no longer on Prevacid and no longer has any problems with GERD. The best thing has been the weight gain - she has gained 22 lbs. since going on the curcumin. This may not sound like alot of weight to gain in a year - but, it is remarkable for my daughter because she had alot of problems gaining weight - or she would gain then lose. Her weight has been climbing steadily for the past 6 months.

When she first started the Curcumin she had diarrhea - but, we didn't stop using it (many people do) we kept giving it and eventually her body got used to it and the diarrhea went away. ALSO - my daughter had bouts of DIOS atleast 3 times a year prior to introduction of Curcumin - she has not had one flare up since using Curcumin.

My daughter is 11 years old (12 in August) and is presently taking 1475mg (split into 2 doses) per day. We are basically following the mice model (45mg/kg/day) with each capsule having 295 mg curcumin. We use the Solaray brand and it is fairly inexpensive (we purchase on-line to get better prices). We do not use any of the enhancers that some people suggest (i.e. piperine, etc.).

As far as improvement in lung function - that would be hard to say because my daughter has not had any pulmonary problems as of yet. I know alot of the early results of the curcumin trials state that it does not help lung function. But, like her physician has said - overall nutritional status does influence pulmonary function. Another wonderful result since Curcumin is the fact that her liver enzymes have been normal for 8 months now. Prior to Curcumin she had elevated liver enzymes and "fatty liver" as a result of all the pancreatic enzyme use. But, she is off the pancreatic enzymes and her liver function is normal.

My daughter is double delta F508. There is a on-line support group for people using curcumin if you are interested in speaking to others who are trying or thinking of trying curcumin. The group is curcuminforcf @yahoo groups.com

I just wanted to say that the CF Foundation is still not reccommending that people self dose with curcumin. They are still doing studies to establish proper doses and possible side effects and drug interactions. The Seattle CF clinic where I am seen is only in the second phase of human trials (I was going to participate in the study but you have to be a double delta F508 and I'm a single).

I'm not knocking anyones results but even natural suppliments can have serious side effects.

I understand that and I am not telling anyone to use the curcumin. My daughter is being followed by a physician with regards to her use of the curcumin - that's how we know what her liver function studies are showing - this is one area they watch in detail. I wanted my daughter to be in the study (our CF clinic is one of the sites) - but, we signed up too late.

Also note: the amount she is taking is no more than the amount used in alot of dishes in India. One of my daughter's CF docs is from India.

In the beginning I took curcumin by 750 capsules, 2 a day. From what I had researched there really is no known side effect of the extractant. I didnt really notice any improvement in my health although I had an increased appetite as well as increased reflux. But that would be expected with a spice.
