Daycare for 3 month old

My daughter Sofia was just diagnosed with CF a couple days ago. She is three months old. We found out through the newborn screening test. Then my husband and I had genetic testing that confirmed her diagnosis. However, at 8 weeks old, her sweat test came back negative. Also, she is gaining weight and thriving and doesn't seem to be showing obvious symptoms of the disease at this time. I am on maternity leave right now but I will be going back to work very soon. When I asked the CF center at Children's Hospital in L.A. they told me I should try to stay home with her the first year and not put her in daycare or hire someone to come to my home. My husband and I don't really have the money to hire someone full-time to come to our home and I need to keep my job in order to have health insurance for my daughter.

Any advice would be a big help.

Much Thanks! Bee

this is a topic where alot of people have different opinions.....my cf specialist also strictly recommended no daycare....(i ended up selling my house and moving into an apt to stay home and take care of my daughter)...i can understand your worry over the insurance issue!! i wish i had something different to tell you...but like i said, my doc also stressed no daycare. I suppose it also depends on how many kids are in the daycare, the cleanliness of the facilities, the staff responcibility, etc...i know how hard it is to deal with the diagnosis alone...and then have to deal with the "logistics" of it all. good luck and God bless!!

DS started daycare at 3 months. It wasn't an easy decision, we thought long and hard about it. We decided we would give it a try and rethink things if DS' health got worse. We knew that eventually DS was going to be going to regular school, so we asked his doctor, who didn't have an issue with daycare. Main concern was with making sure DS as an infant was kept away from the germy toddlers. The daycare we chose had a separate room for the babies and there were only 6, including DS.

We were also informed if there were any illnesses going around the daycare. Also very comfortable with their germ control measures -- sanitizing toys, tables, changing tables.

Our local cf clinic prefers the children stay home, don't go outside during the summer, out in public...

i went to a woman's home daycare until i was old enough to go to kindergarten. maybe look into something like that. she kept 5 kids at a time, was certified by the state, went to continuing education classes in early childhood education etc. and was just generally a wonderful person! now, 24 years later, she is still a huge part of me and my brother's life. that might be a good alternative to a traditional larger daycare center.

being as there were only a few kids she was looking after she was better able to pay attention to special dietary needs for me and give me enzymes, other meds, etc. i would ask around your community and see if there is any reputable, trustworty person(s) that have a home daycare.
