Beth Sufian is a lawyer who works with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Legal Help Network. Her job is to help people in your situation. She is exceptionally good at getting insurance companies to provide equipment and she knows the ins and outs of applying for social security for your child.

Here's a link to some information about her and her passion for helping people wade through all the legalities of getting things done.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cff.org/LivingWithCF/InTheSpotlight/">Living With CF: Beth Sufian</a>

Here is a link to the <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cff.org/LivingWithCF/CFLegalHotline/">CF Legal Hotline </a>and info about what they do. The number to call is toll free 1-800-622-0385. You can also email CFlegal@cff.org

I wish things were easier for CFers to get the support they need. Hang in there. You're probably so tired of fighting these sort of battles. We're here to support you as you walk this road. You're not alone in this.

Best Wishes,
Lauren

We have battled with one agency after another for eight years. Conor has been denied several times now even though his health is not as good as it was. I was actually told by a representative at the disability office that Conor was not sick enough and did not have enough hospitalizations to qualify for assistance. I asked her if she thought that maybe it was because he got all his treatments and meds and the care he needed, which is financialy draining? She said it might be better if he had more hospital stays on paper to show. I am proud to say that I got up and told her she could shove the money where the sun does not shine and I would keep fighting to keep Conor out of hospital. It took us five years just to get medical assistance, which does not have any so called barriers if the illness is terminal or chronic.
After my divorce I tried again as trying to keep a job while caring for a cwcf is hard. They said if I am fired then I can apply for unemployment. Oh God theese people do not get it at all do they?
Maybe we should have an official "take a lawmaker home for a day " day and then maybe we would get someone making theese rules with an ounce of common sense <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">

When my son who si now 14 (w/CF) was born, we had NO health insurance. I tried to get SS for him so he would have health insurance and we awere denied because we made "too much money". At the time we made about $32,000 a year and his med expenses were around 10-12 K. PLUS we had a 250K hospital bill to pay from his birth. They take into condsideration the whole households income.

What are you trying to get out of SS, the insurance or the money?
