Depression & transplant

I had a small history of depression (not nearly as much as some people) and even took meds for it for a little while and it didn't effect me being listed at all.

I have not had any problems with depression post transplant but I had to see a psychiatrist anyway because it was standard procedure for the Cleveland Clinic. When I went in and sat down, the psychiatrist told me "I really have no idea why you're even here." LOL The part that sucked about that...we still had to pay $450 for her to tell me that because my insurance wouldn't cover it since there was no cause for me to have that appointment.

What the transplant team really looks for during the evaluation is support. You really have to have a support team, people who show strongly that they are going to be there to help you post transplant because you won't be able to take care of yourself for a while. They do also look into psychiatric history to make sure that you understand what you are going through and that you can handle it. The only thing that the docs questioned with me is if my body could handle having double lung and liver or not. I was getting really thin and was getting more and more infections.

Once I had the c-section to deliver my son (whom I carried for 33 weeks), they were sure that I could handle a transplant that big.

Good luck!

I'm waiting for transplant, 7 months now, and I've only now had some depression issues. In the eval, they do make me answer questions about suicidal thoughts, self-medicating, drugs, alcohol, hurting yourself, all that. But I think what it does come down to is if your quality of life is pretty bad, you're going to be depressed, theres no way around it. So depression comes with CF, especially around transplant time when we don't know how long we have. I tried Paxil for a month last summer when I was going through a hard time but haven't been on anti-depressants since even though my medical records say I suffer from anxiety and depression.
