Depression

I have heard/been told:

1. Think about it this way....(insert happiness here)

2. other people have it tougher, don't be such a baby.

3. get over it, no one else thinks about it that way.

4. If you go to church more, you'd be happier.

I have had many people tell me to change the way I think about things. And although I am religious and attend church I know that is not what was deppressing me. People are so quick to put a label on it; and usually its something they can relate to...not the person who is depressed.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>It's very very very easy to become seriously depressed with CF. I would say those who aren't depressed at all who have CF would be as well populated as magical unicorns in Detroit. I have had bouts with it in the past as well. What makes me feel better is when I think of all the things I have to be thankful for. If you legitimately think of all the wonderful/beautiful/loving/meaningful/positive things in your life, you should probably start to feel better about your situation. </end quote></div>

I'm not sure I entirely understand what you're saying here -I would think there are plenty of people who have cf who haven't had to deal with depression. I think 'depression' is different from 'feeling blue': Depression is an illness.

Anyway, I think you misinterpreted (sp) or misunderstood my post... I'm looking for people who have heard frustrating comments or advice and what it was. I mean with CF alone, I've been told so many times to have my cough checked out which I find funny, but it is frustrating!

Thank you Wheezie, Diane, SaltyAndSweet, they're super! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

* snap out of it

* it could be worse

* I understand how hard it is for you but you can't live in isolation all the time

and my all time favorite:

*you just want the attention!

I think alot of people don't truly understand what depression is. They think of it like a case of the blues and it will pass in time. For some yes this might be the case, but for others it doesn't. For me I have had depression for a long time, but when I was younger I was able to avoid it by ignoring the problem - CF. But a few years ago the problem became worse and then it was harder to ignore. Last summer I hit my limit and try as I could there was no way I could bring myself out of the depression. I couldn't even think straight. A few people (close friends) told me to knock it off, get over it, cheer up, yadda yadda. I finally was sent for a psychiatric evaluation and am now on Anti-depressants. They don't make me super happy they just take the edge off so that I am able to think clearly. I don't think people can truly understand depression and how hard it is to just make yourself happy unless they suffer from it too.
