Hi, my name is carolynn i am an Industrial Design student from milwaukee WI. I do not have CF but my Boyfreind and his brother both do. For my Senior Thesis i am redesigning "the vest".

I was wondering if people could tell me the problems they have occured with thier vest or any respritory therapy at all... or with thier family memebers. What do you like about the vest you have, which vest and other theropys do you use. is it hard for you to use.. Where in the house do you do the therapy. Do you travel with the vest? Is it difficult? Do you find it effective? Dose it hurt to bad? Dose your medi-port get in the way. If you are female dose it hurt the breast area?

Any thing anyone can tell me will be most helpful and greatly appreiciated. I know thier are many individual proplems with current models and i would like to attend to those. THANK YOU

god bless ,

I had a Vest years ago when the machine was still HUGE and clunky. And I don't know if it's been changed yet (though it doesn't look like it from the pictures)... and I would suggest allowing room in the Vest for boobs. Or making it stop right below the boobs. I found it extremely painful myself. I have sensitive boobs.

Maybe make the hoses stay on better, or keep the plug in the machine better. It always seems that halfway through my routine, the hoses pop off, or the plug has to be pushed harder to work. I don't know, just a thought.

I agree with the hose statement... mine are forever popping off and when I bend down to plug myself back in, the other side pops out

Also, they should for sure make a cut out with open circles or something, the vest needs to fit properly .... and I think with proper cut outs for women, it can be snug and be more effective.. right now they just have size, S,M,L their should be some kind of fitting for ten thousand dollars ..... Vibrating my actual chest is not the focus....

Hi Carolyn,

I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but there is a new, more compact version of the vest than the one Emily referred to. It is still heavy, but it does fit in a medium size duffel bag, and is reasonably easy to travel with if you don't have to carry it far.

My problems with the vest stem from my experiences with the Vest and with Chest Physical Therapy.

There are a lot of things that correct Chest PT does that the vest, in its current, or even future form cannot duplicate. For example, the different positions involved in Chest PT rotate the body, allowing each lobe of the lung to drain downward... think of the lobes as cups of water on a water wheel.. the water comes out of them the best when they are pointing down.

However, even though it is tough to envision a Vest that duplicates Chest PT in this way, there are improvements that can be made.

I think the vest would do a better job of dislodging plugs and mucous in the small airways if:

1) It could hit me harder -- the vest, even when cranked up, really doesn't hit me that hard... I can get much more force in Chest PT -- consider too that all the force in Chest PT is concentrated on one lobe, and not dispersed around my entire chest, as is the case with the vest.

2) Vibrate slower -- If it could hit me HARD at a slightly slower frequency, I think that would be better than the ridiculously high frequency it shakes me at now. I feel like it would give more time for air to work its way in behind plugs (which is necessary for them to start moving out). Even the fastest Chest PT is slower than the frequency of the vest.

I haven't had a lot of issues with my hoses... but seems like that would be a nice plus too.

Thanks for trying to help, good luck in your class!

Mark's vest weighs about 15lbs-MAX. It's about 1.5 ft by 3/4 ft and about 1 foot (maybe) high with a handle for carrying. Looks a little large but not at all heavy. Just had to weigh in on that portion.

It needs to be more affordable. I tried seeing if I could trade mine in (I have the huge bulky one) for the smaller version. But my inssurance won't pay to rent the smaller one because it's higher in price. So the big one just sits in my room (I'm too small to use it). As if our care wasn't expensive enough.

i also agree with the hoses falling off. also the bladder on the front that inflates bugs my son because it inflates up under his chin.(with the blue vest) and with the black style vest the shoulder straps dont adjust enough, to have a good fit.

It would be nice if the duffel bag it comes in had wheels, like the new suitcase - a handle that pulls out, so you can just drag it around when you travel. Also, the shoulder straps on the black vest rub the side of my daughter;s cheeks when she uses it. It also keeps riding up so I have to pull it down every few minutes so it won't irritate her face.
