Did you get a CVS?

Did any of you get a CVS done to see if they baby has CF? DH was carrier tested before we got pregnant and is not supposed to be a carrier, but I know there is always a chance. I am leaning very strongly towards getting one done, because if the baby does have cf I want to know so I can be prepared (ha) for that.

If I know that I am going to have a CVS done, is there any point to getting the Downs/chromosomal screening done first?

I had my first appointment yesterday, and it looks like everything is fine, although I may have started out with twins, b/c there were two sacs. I was a little disconcerted by the doctor and nurse though...I am going to this particular hospital b/c they are supposed to have a lot of experience with cf, but they made a few comments that made me think that they don't know very much about it.

I didn't get the CVS done - First DH was screened with the Ambry test so we are pretty sure he isn't a carrier. Second, I didn't want any invasive testing done that had a chance of causing a miscarriage especially since DH isn't supposed to be a carrier - we were going to keep the baby, CF or no CF. They can look later using ultrasound to see if there are any problems with the bowel. And you can have the baby sweat tested after birth, which we did do for Logan but won't do for this next one.

So did you only have a fetus in one of the sacs?

i have two ob's, one is a maternal specialist. i kinda wish i only had to go to the specialist though, he seems to know a lot more. the very fist appointment i had with the specialist he talked to me about having a cvs test and what my thoughts were and asked if my husband had been tested for cf and if so what the results were. we told him that he had been tested and it was negative (we had the big panel test done). he seemed happy with that and then asked us our opinion on the cvs test to test for down syndrome (i have a cousin with downs). and i told the specialist it didn't matter if the baby had anything it's still our baby and we would be keeping it. and he told us then he didn't see any reason to do the cvs test. not to mention i don't want any unnessary testing done. it's all just your personal preference though. once the baby is born i'm going to have it tested to see if it is a carrier or not. it's all just a personal prefence though like i said. but my regular ob at my last appt was talking about doing the cvs test and i didn't out right tell him that i didn't want to have it done because i had already discussed it with my other doctor. i have another appt with both doctor's on the same day, so i know he's going to want to pull blood for it and i'm going to tell him no and i'm sure i'll get some sort of speech of why i should get it done, but it doesn't matter to me. i think it just all depends on what you and your husband want really. good luck though! how far along are you?

Hi Jenny,

I was in your shoes four years ago. Newly pregnant and my husband was screened. We didn't do CVS or Amnio. I guess I figured ignorance was bliss at that point, there was nothing I would do (like terminate) so why know ahead of time? But that was my opinion. I had many ultrasounds, but that was the most invasive procedure and quite frankly, they were fun!
