Diet for Pancreatic Insufficiency?

My 7.5 year old daughter started Creon 12000 (3x a day) two weeks ago. She has done very well on it. Her stomach aches have essentially gone away and she feels better.

Her GI specialist has her on Boost 1.5 to up the calories but we had not been giving her much of it lately. Yesterday, she drank a full one in the afternoon and then complained that her stomach hurt and eventually threw up (her dinner and boost). I was wondering if it was just too much fat at one time (does that make sense). The boost 1.5 has 17 fat grams. For PI, is a low fat or high fat diet recommended?

Thanks,
KKN
Mom to 7.5 year old daughter with "mild" pancreatic insufficiency, lactose intolerance, growth hormone deficient, inconclusive sweat test who will have Ambry test next week

DS takes Creon 12000 as well; however, he usually takes 6-7 with meals and 4-6 with snacks. He's on a high fat diet -- whole milk with carnation instant breakfast and cream. He eats a lot of peanuts & sunflower seeds. If he has something lower in fat he takes fewer enzymes. If he eats/drinks something with no fat -- fruit, fruit juice, clear candy then he doesn't take any enzymes.

You said 3 times a day? Is she taking them with meals?Could she have reflux issues? Is she still stooling okay? Sometimes when DS was younger and constipated he would eat well, but then throw up later.

Thanks for the reply Ratatosk. Our GI prescribed the Creon to be taken with meals but she had her boost yesterday afternoon in between meals so I did not give her a pill (hmm, I had not thought of that). Her stools look much better now after being on Creon, but she did have a messy one yesterday after having the boost. Maybe she should have had Creon with the boost. She has "mild" pancreatic insufficiency (fecal elastase of 145) so the GI doc only prescribed 90 pills for the month (one for each meal).

Hi there,

My daughter is extremely pancreatic insufficient. She has always needed to be on high dose enzymes with anything she eats that has protein, fat, carbs, except simple sugars like jello fruit, vegetables.

I consider Boost equivalent to a small meal. Maybe you should check with your GI Doc about if your daughter would need enzymes with Boost? It does have alot of fat and protein in it.

I'd say it was probably the boost without enzymes that caused her issues. DS is a snacker and I'm forever handing him enzymes -- his snacks and nutritional beverages can end up having the fat equivilant of a small meal if not more.

I'm STILL trying to get theatre popcorn figured out -- apparently a cup of it has 600 calories and based on his very loose output, I'd been lowballing the # of enyzmes to give DS.
