Disability advice

Hi All!

This is the first time I've posted to the entire "Adult" forum, so hello to those I do not know. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My boyfriend just decided to look into going on disability. He's been in the hospital 4 times in the past 10 months. He usually only goes in 2 times a year, but this year has been hard on him. Anyway, he got a letter from the HR department at his work, which said he ran out of FMLA days.... basically his job is no longer protected (until the FMLA days renew in September). He goes back to work tomorrow after being out for 3 weeks while in the hospital.

Anyway, neither of us know that much about disability and how it works. Does anyone out there have any information or advice to pass on? We are worried that he will struggle financially if he does go on disability (we live together).

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! We aren't too worried that he'll lose his job, but you just never know. He definitely qualifies for disability, but he's been reluctant to accept the fact that at 27 years old he might, realistically, need to apply for it.

Katie,

I am so sorry to hear about this. I really don't have any advice for you, but I just wanted to say that I am sorry...I know that it must be really stressful for you both. I will do some looking and see if I can find any good info for you.

Hang in there!

Hi Katie,

Beth Sufian is a lawyer who deals with a lot of disability issues and she writes a column in the CF Roundtable newsletter. She also has CF, so she knows what you're dealing with, and I'm sure she can help. Here is her contact info:

800-622-0385
bsufian@usacf.org

I called her a few times with disability questions -- she was a great help. YOu might also want to get in touch with the disability office in the town where you live. They should have their own website and lots of info for you.

Good luck!

Hi Katie - I agree with Barbara; Beth Sufian is an excellent resource, especially with this sort of thing. You can also talk to the social worker at Richard's CF Clinic - they often know information more specific to your particular location and if they don't know the answers, they can usually tell you where to find them (a lot of times their other patients tell them how THEY did it too). Not to mention just being a friendly face to talk to about the emotional aspects of making a decision like this.

I can tell you that when I was on disability, I did struggle financially. However, I did not ask a lot of questions and I bet there were more resources out there that I could have used, but didn't. And I am no longer on disability. I say this because sometimes it might feel like making the decision to go on disability is such a permanent way of admitting defeat. But It doesn't have to be a permanent thing at all and it most certainly is not defeat. And there are a lot of jobs out there too that can be accommodating with flexible hours, etc. I work part-time now - Sometimes we just hit rough patches and need a break for a little while. Good luck to you both - feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk more about this.
