Disability Question-Handicap Parking

Got mine in college! It really helps! On the days where I don't feel good and the weather makes it hard for me to breathe or walk, i use it. if i feel well i dont use it! Dont get caught up in being embrassed or it makes you feel like you even more sick! It took me awhile to do this and accept a handicap sticker because it made me feel like i was taken advantage of the system. It took a few very cold days and very hot days to make me realize that the sticker is a God send! It really helped me to deal with the weather affecting my breathing. Now i take it everywhere with me and my friends and family love me for it!!

Thank you for the responses

@Incomudrox I am not offended. I live in Pittsburgh too My understanding of a disability parking pass is to give someone with a disability the same access as someone without a disability. None of my friends cough to the point of puking when they go get groceries or decide to stay in the house until someone can go with them so they can be dropped off at the door. I have never used disability services in college or up until now. I understand what you are saying and I am sure when my quality of life declines due to decrease lung function I will have a new perspective. I am sure I too will look back at 70's from 20's and think what did I have to complain about. I feel I deserve a dr that knows me and understand when I am asking for something it is not because I do not know how or want to wear a scarf, do not want to walk because it is cold, but I am asking because I need it.

I do not plan on use it unless I need it. Sure it would be embarrassing, but I would rather use it that suffer.

I just moved to Pittsburgh. I am going to email my other cf dr that has known me for years and I am sure he will have no problem signing the form since he actually knows me.

I have one. I try not to use it unless I am sick or exhausted, mostly because I know that if possible the exercise is good. My doc get me mine.

I've had one since college (~10 yrs). My lung function is good (70%), but like others said, it's good in the winter. Honestly, I rarely use it, because I hate the nasty looks I get. One time, at a restaurant, two older men were talking about how I parked in a handicapped space. My mom got right up in their faces and said "She has cystic fibrosis. The life expectancy is 35." It was pretty awesome! Anyway, I've had a number of incidents like that, so unless I feel like I need it, I don't use it!

<begin quote>Originally posted by: Momto2 I would personally be embarrassed to get a handicapped placard unless I was below 40% again and truly busting ass trying to do everything I could to improve my fitness and stamina and it wasnt working. I think a lot of people want the easy way out by not exercising and they are not doing themselves any favors. Everybody has to do what they think best for themselves regarding a placard, but if there are any troublesome elements in the equation (weather, physical fitness, more timely meds) that can changed, better controlled, or improved, you might want to consider that option first to truly improve your quality of life.</end quote>

Wait, I"m confused. I don't want the easy way out. I am below 40%, and I am not embarrassed at all to use mine, nor should anyone be embarrassed to use one.

I have had a placard since college. It really made things easier at the crowded campus and you don't have to pay at parking meters. One less stress in life and on your lungs & energy.
Get one. With all that CF puts you through, you deserve a perk.
