Distance to Center

I think it depends - I know for my center they want you to be within 3 hours I believe as mentioned by others. That being said when I was called I didn't have to be to the hospital until 7 hours later and my surgery didn't start until about 20 hours after my first call, so had I lived farther away I would have had plenty of time.

I know for my center they allow people to live farther away dependent upon their spot on the list. They do check ups every 3 months and when they feel the time is getting close to being called then they tell the person they need to move closer. So I think it is something that you would need to talk in detail about to your team and get their opinions but it shouldn't be that big of a deal for you.

It does normally affect if you get the call or not. Sometimes, the lungs are not at the center that you are going to be transplanted at, so not only do you have to get to the hospital, the lungs have to get to the hospital too.

If the lungs match you and another person who is closer to the center, the person who is closest will get the call first. If it doesn't work out for the first person, then they will call you.

I live 6 huors away from my center and I don't remember what they told me about the time I had to get there, but I do know that we made arrangements to where they would send a medical flight to the close-by small airport and fly me in to Cleveland (45 min flight).

Nothing like that ended up happening. I went into my CF hospital for major hemoptysis and after 5 days, was flown to Cleveland to be admitted there. Three days after I was admitted is when I got the news that I was getting the transplant. It is actually quite frequent that the recipient is already in the hospital when the organs become available.
