do colds turn into infections?

Ella is two months wcf diagnosed at 9 days and has a cold, I went to the dr's and he said she is fine and just has a cold. Every time she coughs I nearly loose it crying. Is her cold going to turn in to an infection? She is my first child and I am still learning about cf, I don't know what to look for. The Dr told me to call if she spikes a fever and told me to try a few other theraputic solutions. What should I expect to happen? Will it go away on it's own or will it most likely get worse.

I was worried sick, too when DS was first diagnosed. A couple people told me that their kids would get colds and it'd turn into something worse; however, DS's CF doctor told us that he was going to get colds, he was going to get sick. Just need to keep an eye on, learn to know his cough if he gets one -- is it postnasal drip or is it bronchial/chesty. Can't remember the number of coughs the average toddler gets each year, but it's phenomenal.

Last year he did get a cold which turned into an upper respiratory infection. His doctor put him on antibiotics (cipro). I could just tell from the cough -- was an icky sticky sorta bronchial cough.

That's not to say I don't worry. If something's a little off, he gets a cough or a fever, I worry, worry worry and I'll cry. Just have to be vigilant!

We got lucky and Logan didn't get his first cold until he was 6 months old, but when he did I felt the same way you are feeling. I was worried sick. Eventually you will learn the difference between nasaly congestion and chesty congestion. The cf dr. upped his treatments, put him on an antibiotic, and we used a cool mist humidifier at night. The cold cleared up and he made it through it fine. The one thing i've learned is that when you do find the baby coming down with a cold let the cf dr. know right away. If they decide to give antibiotic they will base the dicision on what kind to give based on the last throat culture and when was growing in it. My son pretty much always has staph. Every cold is scarry, but you learn how to take control over it and it gets easier. I still worry every time, and us mom's or dad's always will! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I remember the fear of the first cold as well. It's very scary. Your ped is right about her getting a cold, not being an infection, etc. However, the cold sets up a perfect environment for other germs to come on in and set up camp. My cf center always wants to know when Leila has a cold so they can decide if they want to treat her prophylactically. Does it help the cold? Absolutely not, but hopefully it helps <i>prevent</i> something else. I would call your CF center and at least let them know. Especially since it's her first cold. That way they can decide how they want to handle it and let you know what to do in the future. Hope your baby feels better soon!

Colds have to run their course, and unfortunately it is POSSIBLE that the cold gunk could create an opportunity for the CF bugs to grow and cause a problem.

I'd call your CF nurse, she should be able to help you decipher what to do now, and how to handle it in the future. BIg HUGS going out to you, the first year is tough, we are just out of that first year and I promise it gets easier to deal with the day to day stuff.
