I took enzymes when I was a child (under the lovely "one treatment fits all" idea), and always had stomach/intestinal gas pains and bloating- turns out the symptoms I had were the same symptoms I have now of taking too many of the wrong enzymes (for me).
When I stopped taking them when I got older, I felt better and gained weight (I think I may have eaten more because my tummy felt better). Now I need to take them sometimes, but it took me 3 or 4 different brands before I found one that didn't give me the problems. Even as an adult, I only take one with dinner (with my vitamin), a greasy or really big meal, or else I am in pain from too many enzymes.
Have they done a fecal fat test to determine if he is pancreatic sufficent or insufficent? If he's sufficent, then the enzymes will probably give him tummy issues.
And have they checked his vitamin levels?
If she didn't order those tests before putting him on enzymes, she (or the doctor) should have. I would ask for them if they want to continue the enzymes.
You might want to have them take a look at his gallbladder, if he is complaining about pain after meals, just to be safe . I hope he is feeling better soon.
