Do most people with CF die from it?

i have a 10 yr old sister w/ cf, the problem is my ma smokes in the house. she thinks if she uses a fan or a curtain to shield her from it, its ok. but she lets her in the very same room afterwards. the house is filthy. not because they're lazy, but she has 3 younger kids and they live in a very small, very confined apt. its always cluttered and they now have roaches. no matter how much i try to help her find a way to make things better for them so its not so dirty, she always thinks i am trying to tell her how to take care of her kids. i love my family so much, i just want a better life for them. my fear is that my sister is going to die at a young age b/c of how my ma has them living. what can i do...is there anyone out there who can give some helpful advice?

im sorry about your sis and your mom. its very unhealthy for seconed hand smoke for u and your sis and family. talk 2 your doctor or school nurse. your sis might die at a younger age because your mom smokes. everthing that your sis breathes in might get stuck 2 the mucus and have all the bad chemicals stuck right in her lungs. for now, try 2 keep your sis outside away from the smoke and try 2 make her cough as much mucus as she can.

With CF, it's outright abuse. If she gets a check in from DCF, it may give her a kick in the @ss she needs to AT LEAST smoke <i>outside</i>.

dcfs just freed my ma from all investigations. she just finished a 2 yr battle with them. she has improved alot, and she never used to smoke around her, but my brothers dad moved in and now its all about him and what he wants. i was the one who called dcfs on her in the first place. she is a great ma, but now she is so scared she'll end up alone that she heeds his every beck and call. he's a manic depressant and has a bad temper. whatever he wants he gets. its like her kids arent being put first in her life. she has no transportation and his ma usually helps, but only if she will benefit from it. she has even told the girls that she didnt like them or my mom. i am 22 and live on my own. they grew up calling me ma. i am so scared for my sis. she has had so many hospital visits, and she has been so very brave about it. she gets spoiled by the dr.'s but my ma uses her disease as a sympathy grabber to get what she wants. im afraid my sister will pick up on that and do the same when she gets older. she wants to be a dr. when she gets older to those with cf. i am in college and i am a huge role model to them. i just hope everything that i am doing is enough to lead her in the right direction... if she makes it that long. i dont know how to get through to my ma. dcfs didnt work. i even tried to get custody of them. she played them like she was mother of the year. HELP.
